I don't deny that how Trump politicized the wall from the git-go alienated the progressive wing of the Democratic party. They are louder than ever after the mid-terms. The hyper partisan political charade IS extremely ridiculous.

The issue cannot, however, be about that charade. It has to be on the merits of the wall.

There's a reason why many on the border - especially in the Rio Grande valley oppose it. There is a reason why the Secure Fence Act of 2006 was amended only after one year. This isn't the thread to get back into all that.

But there are real functional reasons.

EXACTLY.

The last deal - that he was reportedly ready to sign until Rush and Ann Coulter threw hissy fits about it - was for more than the $5.7B, too, wasn't it?

Yes, I understand it was at a point of entry.....but what else is not coming through these main points of entry?
This has been discussed ad nauseam on other threads, citing DEA and other data. No need to revisit.

Suffice to say that if Trump starts cutting drug counterintelligence funds to put steel spokes in the air maybe we really won't have a handle on drug flows in the future. Today, we have the data we have.

Trump is a bit of a know-nothing. No reason to make the drug enforcement folks the same.

In other threads, always good to bring up points, yes? People have short memories.

Pretty much describes his whole life and what he is most concerned with.

Not the country, not even the party.

This is exactly who he is.

Those who want to declare asylum head either for the ports or for the nearest border patrol officer. Here, our current laws are arguably inadequate. Trump's efforts to end-run Congress and various regulations have been slapped down by the Courts.

I don't have a clue whether it might have been possible to use a national emergency declaration to address some of these issues. Even a temporary fix might send the message to future caravans that our borders are not wide open.

The only stats that show any kind of crisis are not an increase in absolute numbers (which trend down) but the rise in the composition of border-crossers (many of which are legal entries).

It's the increase in the numbers of asylum-seekers, many of whom are women and children.

The steel slats stuck in the desert help here not a whit.

I agree fully that it's good to discuss the national emergency declaration within some factual context. But not to derail the thread.

They tried. He walked away. And being that he's declaring a national emergency for an additional $8 billion, it wouldn't have been enough. He's the one playing politics by declaring a national emergency for a fantasy wall that lives in his head and the heads of his followers. I just hope Gorsuch and Kavanaugh do the right thing. Or at least Roberts. This is where it's going to end up.

Every poll seems to show a similar ratio. There is always between 30 and 40 percent of respondents who are willing to support some action that undermines the Constitution or is ethically challenged.

Every poll seems to settle into the same distribution.
