The Russians don't give two sh*** about American poitical parties. They go with whoever is going to be soft on them, and who's most likely to weaken the country. Conservatives seem to believe that he's on their side, but Putin only cares about Russia, and he would've done anything to avoid a white house with Hillary in it who Putin despises. The second a pro Russia democrat comes out Putin might give up on Trump as well.
Because it provides reasonable cover for the US to refuse to get involved in anything over there. Thats if you assume Trump is a Russian puppet. The truth is probably more complex and nuanced.

Why doesn't Putin just pull some strings and get what he wants ? Any puppet master worth their salt has control of their puppet. When they are done with them they normally just put them back in a box until needed again. Blowing them up would end the puppet show. The show was sold out and the democrats bought all the tickets.
