"A smaller refund" means you got your money back in EACH payday check, instead of giving it to the Feds for a tax-free loan, and then waited for them to graciously give it back. Don't use them for a forced savings plan. That's what bank accounts are for.
You should ALWAYS set your W2's so that you give them the least you can, so that at the end of the year you get back almost nothing, or owe a tiny bit, say $100 or less. That's the perfect way to go, if you can tweak it that well.

That puts you in the $82,501 to $157,500 tax bracket. Probably higher.
If you are hurting on that kind of income, then maybe you need to working on that money management thing.
Suddenly having to fork out $8000 and give it to Donald Trumps government (and get nothing in return) hurts no matter how much you make. Its an insult.

You mean you would have received a $2500 refund with the old tax law? Let's see how the new law treats you. If you have dependents, you'll probably take a hit.

I plugged my 2018 numbers Iinto 2017 turbotax and my tax bill would I too am about 2500 ahead over last year.
That is really the only way to see if you're ahead or not.
