This goes double for his MAGA hat-wearing, worshipping base. As long as he reinforces their simple-minded world view and plays to their grievances and prejudices, they'll never turn from him, no matter what proof is brought to the table.

The source existed —but the source was a liar—someone who created the story out of air
It was just not a reliable/factual piece of information
It was made up to drive the conspiracy theory away from Russians/Trump people/Wikileaks conspiracy
