I was just pointing out that Ms Loughlin wasn't a leftist socialist. Some of the posters on this thread seem to think that this college fraud is some sort of leftist plot. In reality, it's parents who want to give their children everything, and a con man who was able to set up a network willing to engage in college admissions fraud. The price was high, but as it's already been stated, the 1%ers don't engage in this. They essentially have their own network of friends in high places, and they know the going rates (donations, buildings, resources) to get their children into the network.

While USC is a great school, getting into USC doesn't get you into the same elitist networks that getting into Yale or Harvard does. Ms Loughlin was just trying to get her daughters into the schools the daughters wanted into.

I think most of these parents are going to be very cooperative, and plead ignorance of the law. They knew what they were doing was wrong, but not that it was illegal, and they thought that they were just doing what other parents did, helping their kids get into college.

Felicity Huffman is married to Fargo's Jerry Lundegaard. "I'm cooperating here!"

In most schools if a kid has somewhat decent grades & is anticipated to be paying the full ride, they would get in - -especially a state school.

But it seems in California -- there are so many rich kids that they really can't let everyone in who can pay full tuition, so you have to pay even more.

Didn't we all assume that rich kids got into schools easier, especially when parents coughed up donations?

Not sure why this response is directed at me--it doesn't apply to my family's situation --but thanks for sharing it!

Expensive branding stations like Yale, Columbia, and Brown will churn out inferior products if they allow this to happen. The so-called adults involved aren't doing the kids or the schools any favors. No one comes out a winner.

I was once told by a cop "ignorance of the law is not an excuse". Let's see if it works the other way for those with money and high-priced lawyers.

The post wasn't directed at anyone in particular.

The realization that they won't get into X school doesn't normally happen until they're sophmores in highschool or later.

At that time, it's too dang late to fix someone on a so-so education path.

Just like it's a little late at that point to have them start playing basketball in hopes of a Div 1 scholarship. (Unless they're super tall and athletic)

Always made me laugh hearing how athletes got there by working hard while really smart people were just lucky to be born that way.....yeah right.
Tutors for less than stellar course grades, which would impact their test scores. And then the second half of my post stated parents should then send their kids to the schools they can get into, given those grades and score.

It's not always a matter of being naturally smart, as you state - it's putting in the work and being prepared. If they weren't willing to do that through high school, they aren't likely to do that in college, either.

Lori Loughlin's one daughter has stated she has no interest in school and is busy working as a model or something. Her parents (particularly her father) are worth $50 million. She won't be wanting if she doesn't (pretend to) get a college degree.

Completely. All my illusions are shattered. I was so sure it was all merit-based.

That said, I've always known that lower scoring foreign students are charged very high rates, helping to pay for poorer citizens. That has always been deemed a win-win.

Why do you think our colleges have so many Iranian students, a country that hates the US and Americans? For every Iranian student, that is one less American that gets bumped to the curb. It is because they pay full pop tuition! Higher education is all about the money!
