I'd be interested in knowing more about you. Are you American (and if so, native-born?), youngish, college-educated, liberal, white, and middle class or above?
(I'm just trying to figure out the type of people who have "subconscious" hostility to the American flag and associate it with "arrogance." )
When I see neighbors display the American flag, I am glad they are proud of their country. Growing up, we always put a flag out on holidays to demonstrate our appreciation of the country. Never occurred to me that people thought that was arrogant!
I've seen videos on YT of people from other countries who visit here who are surprised by the level of flag flying and patriotism that they see when visiting America. Most don't disapprove, but are not used to patriotism being displayed in their country.
Americans are fortunate to have a country in which we are proud to display our love, patriotism and pride in our country.
She may not be perfect, but she is beautiful, she is generous, she is ours and being here beats the hell out of any alternatives out there.
Well, wait around a couple of years—let the Christian Right get into power and maybe Trump make himself president for life and you might see homosexuals and transgendered Americans dealt with that way...
Of course we know adulterers are safe since Trump fits that bill...
Oh come on. People said that during part of the Obama Presidency as well. That notion stretched credulity then, and it stretches credulity now.
From some other threads on here about the American flag, I get the impression there are still many people who do not know flag etiquette, there were people in another thread trying to claim its perfectly fine and great to wear clothing with the flag on it!
( Of course, there was a time I wasnt aware of this either, I wore a Ralph Lauren Polo tshirt that had an american flag on the front and got called out on it at work by a veteran, once I knew that was wrong, I no longer wore that shirt.)
Im not sure its appropriate to paint the flag on a police car.
Yes I am pretty liberal but this is amazingly stupid. It’s even moreso when the local government even deign to respond to this lunacy. Just put the flag image up. Why debate it?
I lived in Newport Beach (one of the cities that borders Laguna Beach) for 7 years. The response from some of the public (which prompted this thread) doesn't surprise me.

No the US uses drones to blow them up, sanctions to starve them/deny them medicines, special ops to pollute the drinking water, bombs to level the hospitals...

The most outright patriotic people i know are all legal immigrants to this country. come 4th of July they celebrate like few natural born Americans I know do. You can almost see tears in their eyes when they sing the National Anthem. They know the value that flag represents and having spent most of their lives without it truly appreciate it.
I would bet real money its not these legal immigrants who are protesting this but people so far to the left they have left the real world long behind. I can't even imagine most illegals have even given a second thought to it, they are busy just trying to stay under the radar and live their lives.
