This, exactly. Part of being a public figure is knowing that some people won't like you, no matter what, and that they will make fun of you. The best response is to roll with the blows, laugh along, and applaud at the appropriate times. You may be President, but you're a human with a sense of humor, like the rest of us, and you can take a joke.
The worst response for a US President is to choose not to attend, and even worse than that, is to order (order? what, are they in the Army?) his staff not to attend, if they are invited. That only opens the gate for even more barbed humor, more biting satire, and more "he sees himself as above the rest of us" remarks.
I'm no fan of Mr. Trump, but I hope that he reconsiders, that he and his staff attend the dinner, and that he takes any humorous jabs with laughter, or at least a smile and a chuckle. That would go a long way towards his re-election bid in 2020; that he can roll with the punches and be an ordinary guy that ordinary Americans could support.
You are talking as if Trump is a somewhat normal mentally balanced person. Where would you get that idea? Most naïve of you.
How is this supposed to look good to anybody not part of Trump's base, especially to the few fence-sitters left. How does this look to the rest of the world, given his behavior and overall track record?
The dinner has been subverted into a Leftist love fest. No need for normal people to attend.

Probably for the best, as nobody wants to listen to people like Michelle Wolf try to be funny, indeed her voice is annoying enough without her lame attempt at comedy.
I thought last years was cringe worthy and awkward.

It was bad enough that CSPAN cut the broadcast and the Correspondence Association issued an apology.
I expect that President Trump was “furious “ last year. This year, he is just disgusted.
He was probably waiting to see how the Media reacted to the Mueller Report. Turns out the Leftist Media is still on board with their Russia Collusion Delusion. The entertainment for the 2019 Dinner is a biographer.
As far as “ordered” goes ... surely everyone is aware that anytime aa Administration official appears on a TV programs, the “order” for that appearance comes from the White House.
Another word for “order” would be approval. President Trump did not approve attendance to the dinner in 2019, considering what they did in 2018.
The Media is well aware the stepped all over lines of decency in 2018.
We've all been to boring, stuffy and crappy events in the past. You learn a lesson and never go back.
I wouldn't go to this either. The jokes sux. Not near as funny as the old days of the old style Comedians.
I'd rather go to spend time raising money for Vets or something decent.
