The patent system should be revised in this country.
There are a lot of abusers that use it to beyond what it was intended for.
There are companies that patent generic drugs to make bank.
Also, patents are big business using the government to rig the capitalist market in their favor.
In free market capitalism patents would not exist.
If I can make something better or cheaper than you, then I just put you out of business.
Do away with patents in the pharma industry and watch the prices fall when competition kicks in.
I think its ridiculous the patent office can suppress certain things, under the 'Invention Secrecy Act...I wonder why these do not expire after 20 yrs!!

Yes, and your examples include research driven results ....
We are talking about round corners on a rectangle. LOL I had calculators in the 80's with round corners. Are you seriously trying to defend this patent?

As the other poster said, it's not an absurd patent. It may be invalid based on precedent (and that's, perhaps, why it was re-reviewed and, later, declined). But if that precedent didn't exist, it would be a valid. It's not like Apple just made a decision on the whim... they did the research behind it and determined a solution that works best. That's what patents protect.

Without exaggeration people have been rounding corners on things since the stone age whether it was for looks, ergonomics or other things. A most recent example nearly identical to the pjone would be a 1980's calculator that could have similar design, shape and size.

It was included in their lawsuit against Samsung and a few other things that were highly questionable. A 5 year legal battle that cost Samsung a stupendous amount of money in legal fees alone. Legal fees Joe Schmoe cannot afford.

Patents are intended to protect someone from having their work stolen by someone, unique and functional ideas. They were not intended to be used to protect against something people have been doing for thousands of years.

You have no idea what you are talking about. What's worse is, you are convinced that you do.
In many countries, patent holders must periodically prove that they're actually using the patent. Not so in the US.
This means that it's difficult to innovate without a high risk of ending up in court being sued for patent infringement of patents that were filed with zero intention of actually materializing onto the market. Instead, it's used as a money trap for future innovators who might invent something even tangentially related.
Do you think this squelches human progress and that the government should stop backing patent hoarders?
It worked for Edison.
Edison didn't actually invent the light bulb, he just bought up a bunch of patents on light bulbs and tinkered with them until he got one that worked the way he wanted it to work.
Perhaps you should lay blame on the people who carelessly sell their patents for next to nothing.
