Of course its smart...when one is afraid of their criminality to be exposed they must be protective of themselves. But it's hugely stupid for the citizenry to accept, enable and defend it.
It is doubtful there is anything criminal to be exposed, that is a "i hate Trump" thought. But it is very likely he has at time skirted the law and certainly the spirit behind the law. You can't be a New York developer and not have done so. The corruption in that business basically guarantees it. I would also be willing to bet if you looked at everything Soros, Cuomo and whatever very wealthy Dem you can think of also is guilty of doing some things that the average person would find aberrant.
The whole without sin throw the first stone comes to mind here. If someone were to rip every aspect of your life apart and that of your family, friends and coworkers what dirt would they find, would you swear something embarrassing or something quasi illegal wouldn't be found. I don't think anyone of us could withstand that type of scrutiny.
And then he gives Trump all of the credit for an economy that was rolling along nicely under Obama and all the while blithely ignoring Trump's long history as a swindler and crook.
It's clear that Cohen gave the Committees plenty of information on Trump and his money laundering and inflation/deflation of income and assets scams. We shouldn't be shocked since this is the same con that scams students and charities.
So we can use this standard for all potential crimes? Were you suspected before? No? Okay, then I guess you got away with it. We're not allowed to look now.
Now that's a novel idea for a new legal precedent. If a person could prove that he committed a crime three times before, but was not arrested or prosecuted for it, he would have immunity from future prosecution for repeating that crime. Serial killers like Ted Bundy would be walking free, by invoking the "Trump Precedent". Bundy killed a dozen or more people, before the crimes were attributed to a single person and it was even longer before they identified him as the killer. Some investigators think he may have killed many more, whose deaths were never linked to him. I would not be surprised if Trump's true list of crimes goes beyond the imagination of any of us.
Do you not think there are a bunch of competitors, domestic and foreign who wouldn't love to get their hands on all of Trump's financial data? Maybe that is who is pushing this, through their democratic "partners".
If I was in a competitive business I wouldn't want all that priatorial info out there either, and you wouldn't either if given the option.
Do you not realize that Trump *should* have divested himself of his businesses, as per the Emoluments Clause?

Not to mention conflicts of interest. Like the Trump International Hotel on Pennsylvania Ave. where the Saudis have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars putting up their lobbyists. And just recently Trump vetoed a bill that would have cut off aid to the Saudi's war in Yemen. Are Trump supporters so morally bankrupt that they can't see the problem of Trump lining his pockets with Saudi money at the expense of human lives in Yemen? That's a rhetorical question since I already know the answer.

Nah...
The Emoluments Clause has been in the Constitution since day one; and, not only did George Washington hang on to Mt. Vernon, he also continued selling his crops abroad.
