Sure, there own voters.

Heavy red districts that hover at the poverty line are many in Texas. Add to that the increase in democrats winning in Texas who would love to regulate all processed food out of the equation.

Of course if you do that, benifits would need to increase to cover the cost of fresh fruits, meats, and unprocessed ingredients. This is the slippery slope we always worry about with regulation of personal behaviors.

And those subsidies we get for health insurance through our employers? (Handout). So the government as well as our insurance companies, and possibly our employers could dictate our habits as well. Perhaps they would make us buy our groceries on a card they will scan and monitor to ensure we didn't buy anything Bad.

Right folks? Be careful what you ask for. They are us, we are them.
It's the taxpayers money-they have every right, and in fact a responsibility, to see that it's spent responsibly. Overpriced junk food with no nutritional value, soda and energy drinks are not a responsible use of the taxpayers money. I don't want to tell poor people what to eat-they are welcome to spend the money they have earned on what they choose. It's when they are spending the taxpayers money that it becomes the taxpayers choice.

I never said that junk food would ever help the consumer. I am saying this. Alot of people love junk food. Many who use food stamps work. Stop people from getting junk food through food stamps, those who work will get the junk food in other ways.

And consider this. Oil, flour, and chicken aren't THAT expensive. You can get those items with food stamps. Technically, they aren't classified as junk food. However, coat the chicken in flour and then fry in it oil, you have another source of obesity right there. And consider something more. A diet heavy in starch and and low in physical activity contributes to obesity. Junk food is a big part of the obesity problem. So are other problems, like a diet heavy on the refined starches.

The most effective way to stop people from eating junk food is do what they did with alcohol: prohibition. Take it out of stores. Don't make it available. But even then some people will try to get some.

The reason so many buy junk food with food stamps is because it's cheaper to buy those type of foods compared to the cost of quality healthy food. So if they limit the food stamps to be spent on such quality healthy food, those who get food stamps will ask for more so they can afford to eat at least two - three times a day. They may have enough in food stamps to pay for three junk food meals a day. However, the same amount of food stamps may only allow them to pay for one healthy meal per day. We'll see how it all pans out.

lol No it usually means they aren't working enough hours. Working 20 hours a week qualifies an individual for food stamps.

Let’s hope this bill passes, it’s the only real way to curb obesity among America’s underclass
I agree that taxpayer funded assistance should go toward healthy foods.
