I had a nightmare last night. I don't have many of those. It was about a wyrm - an enormous, flightless, blind dragon. I like telling people about my nightmares because it makes me feel better.

There are predators of humanity - the mosquito, viruses and bacteria, various parasites, but it seems like most of the big ones have gone extinct or are no longer a threat.

Most of us don't live near tigers or compete with wolves. Most of us don't have to fight leopards or saber-toothed cats.

But there is one big predator left, and it longs to feast upon humanity. This last big predator is called the Wyrm.

Centuries ago the Wyrm hunted humanity most often in the form of a Scaled Wyrm. Its hide was armored in scales like plate mail. It had thousands of spines like spears and halberds and maces.

Sometimes it still takes the form of a Red Wyrm. It follows torch-bearing mobs.

During the bubonic plague, when people killed cats (that hunted the rats that really spread it) due to superstition, it took the form of a Yellow Wyrm - a amorphous serpentine parasite, like filth burst from pustules.

Each time it comes it has thousands of legs and thousands of eyes and thousands of mouths. You can probably guess what its body us made of...so far as it's seemed, at least.

The most ancient of Wyrm forms though, is the Wyrm it began as - nothing more than something brooding in the mind - the Ghostly Wyrm.

The Ghostly Wyrm is the most dangerous of all Wyrms. It is a Wyrm formed purely of ideas, not more easily visible diseases or torch-bearing mindless mobs or barbaric medieval armies.

It exists in the form of various memes - virulent ideas that multiply, evolve, adapt and spread like any disease. Ghostly Wyrms come in a variety of categories, some which are easily seen, but most which are not. They are the following:

*Glowing Wyrms: These wyrms are responsible for the creation of many, but not all, god-based religious beliefs. If a religion demands faith - not research, but faith, and punishes its followers for lacking it, that religion is a creation of the Glowing Wyrm. Glowing Wyrms feed upon reverence of themselves. They procreate through proselytization. The larvae they lay in minds grow up healthiest and strongest in an environment of fear and ignorance. Their eggs frequently are kept warm by the concept of hell. As with many species of bacteria and fungi, sunlight is the best disinfectant. They are killed by the desire to seek wisdom, but it isn't always clear what wisdom is. You can find out what wisdom is by doing research and pondering the world around you. That tends to kill all the most benign of Glowing Wyrms. Glowing Wyrms claim to be the solution to every problem and the the answer to every question, and the righters of every wrong, and that's how they tempt new hosts towards infection.

*Rot Wyrms: Rot Wyrms ooze through the muck of mental sloth. Whenever someone invents some emotionally appealing, idealistic catchy slogan, Rot Wyrms spawn. Rot Wyrms oversimplify everything, because that's how they breed, by suggesting lying, misleadingly simple solutions. All idealistic, catchy slogans are suspect. To Kill Rot Wyrms, always have firm foundations for your strongest views. Don't fall prey to their lies.

*Hunting Wyrms: Hunting Wyrms wear little armor, but this lessens their weight and makes them swift predators. They're always hunting for some new enemy to prey upon. They procreate by telling the minds they infest that they prey they have spotted are the cause of all the world's problems. They want their hosts to devour the prey they have spotted. That's how they feed. They are killed whenever any coherent plans are suggested, or facts are suggested, or rational arguments are suggested.

*Shimmering Wyrms: Shimmering Wyrms, like wraiths, strive to consume the life force of their hosts. They are an inevitable evolution of the first three types of wyrms - glowing, rot, and hunting wyrms.
Shimmering Wyrms have totally encased their hosts in a cocoon of illusions, cutting them off from reality and lulling them into complacency with misleading hopes and daydreams. The host's mind is fully controlled and turned into a wyrm-spawning factory. Their lives are now devoted to serving the Wyrm.

And that's why we need to think about our political opinions, and worldviews and not just conclude them due to poorly thought out idealism, or because we found a meme appealing...because there are what might as well be called psychic parasites that breed every time the Westboro Baptist Church says...pretty much anything.

There are many other breeding grounds for Wyrms too. They're real. They have no physical bodies, but they spread, procreate, incubate, compete, evolve, and grow...and though they do not actually have the emotional drives to want to feed on our destruction, they behave a lot like they do.

I could basically type anything here and it wouldn't qualify as off topic.

Mission accomplished OP.

It takes an incredibly long time for bad ideas to be digested and passed by our collective mind. Centuries and sometimes millennia.

Imagine it's the 12th century. You are a literate cleric and you have just finished reading the Bible. It doesn't make sense and you stop believing it. What do you do now?

Pity the honest man who lies to cope.

Imagine it's the 21st century. Try walking around knowing the actual definition of consent in a sea of social contract adherents.

Makes one wanna jump off a bridge due to madness (with State approval of course).
