Under Senate Bill 378, the revenues from the tax would be earmarked for programs designed to combat income inequality.

A California estate tax benefits low-income families by helping them build wealth and end the cycle of intergenerational poverty,” state Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) said in a written statement.
The best time to hand people a huge tax bill of course is when their loved ones die. Great job CA Democrats.

Why does that state insist on taxing everything they can think of? What are you guys getting in return?

This was introduced 2 months ago and has yet to make it out of the 1st committee. An interesting idea but very far from becoming reality at this point.

Sounds like a decent idea.

So....the first 22.8 million dollars from your rich grandparents (when they die and you inherit) are already being waived from any federal tax, right? Thanks Trump!

I have no problem taxing wealth at these levels. Or even less....

Illegal alien health care, free schooling, and housing subsidies aren't going to pay for themselves.

Do you really believe this is far from reality in California at this point? Or is that just wishful thinking?

The limosuine Dems are hardly united behind increasing their own taxes. I doubt it will come to a vote. There are a LOT of wealthy homeowning liberals in these hills.

Sure, I could buy that, but the limousine libs are outnumbered by the poor (and illegal) libs like 20 to 1. I just wouldn't be so sure that a tax that primarily hits property owning libs wouldn't have a serious chance of passing.

Unless they plan to tax out of state/country estates with assets in California, good luck. Enforcement would be nearly impossible. There would be widespread evasion and tax planning to avoid most of this tax. They know it which is why it will die in committee.
