""""This background memo was originally published in March 2017. A updated version was published in March 2019.
A well-funded, highly coordinated national effort is underway to call a constitutional convention, under Article V of the U.S. Constitution, for the first time in history. The result of such a convention could be a complete overhaul of the Constitution and supporters of the convention are dangerously close to succeeding. With special interest groups gaining more momentum, conservative advocates are just six states short of reaching the constitutionally-required 34-state goal. They are targeting Republican-controlled legislatures in 2018 and are within striking distance.""""
Note well the article says there's calls from both the left and the right.
It’s not as far fetched as it sounds. A coalition seeking just the balanced budget amendment currently has 28 out of the required 34 state legislatures on board, with active bills calling for a convention. Since Trump’s election, Arizona and Wyoming have both passed bills to join in the call while Maryland, Nevada and New Mexico have repealed versions they had previously put on the books.
So, is the US Constitution simply in need of reform? Or do we need to get a new one entirely?
if a States Convention is called, it is an open forum. any proposal is valid for consideration.
i believe 36 states passed laws banning gay marriage. only two more votes could make
it Constitutional and revive the Defense of Marriage Act.
sometimes, "the devil you know is better than the devil you do not".
Can we get to 34 states? Imposing term limits, limiting the ability of the federal reserve to do QE infinity, along with limiting the ability of the federal government to meddle in state affairs are three of the most important issues besides the unchecked flying in of immigrants and the cradle to grave welfare state. What thinks you? Is this something that would blow up in our faces if we tried it?
Virginia should be the next state to vote for it. I'm surprised they have not already done so. I posted the idea on the Virginia forum a couple weeks ago. Youngkin's crushing it there, so there's no headwinds.
After the 2022 Red wave, it will become totally plausible, and yes we should do it.
Why? We are in a bus heading for a cliff right now..we have no choice other than to attempt to regain control.
I see it as our only chance of surviving as a country for another 245 years.
Part of the issue is that states over time have passed resolutions calling for a constitutional convention. Many of these have focused on a specific topics or topics, while others have been general. There's also a question of whether a convention, say if called for a specific purpose, would actually be limited to that purpose if convened.

Let's just get to the dance, & see what music they play afterwards.
This could be a UGE game-changer for America, & put the slimy corrupt DC swamp-creatures back into the cage they all crawled out of...on BOTH sides.

Interesting. Long-serving congressmen and senators are overwhelmingly democrat. You have to search far and wide to find a republican who has enjoyed being re-elected many times.
I guess democrats find someone they like, and loyally stick with them?
Would make sense that republicans want to change the constitution to allow them to boot those people with a large constituent following out of office speedy quick.

Country is headed for either....
1. Civil War
or
2. Peaceful breakup
And I sure hope it is the second option.
We can't continue down the path we have been on. It's not working any longer.
