Why not? It's obvious religion isn't the solution to America's problems. Atheism isn't the cause of America's problems, either. Yet atheists are still viewed with deep suspicion. Sometimes they are even thought of as lacking a moral center. Would you vote for someone who seemed like the best candidate overall and was an atheist? If not, why not?
I think religion slows down mankind. I understand the purpose that it helps make insecure people or people going through scary/hard times feel better (the need for parental love and protection doesn't end just because you turn 18).

As long as they didn't denigrate religious folks and religion like many atheists do (they pick fights, if you will . . . religious folks tend to frown down upon atheists too, but they generally aren't in your face about it or the ones picking fights about it) and as long as they still hold similar values/morals as I do, then sure.
