It can't ... that's the whole point. The Bible tells an interesting story to this point. The man deemed crazy in his day, was building an Ark, claiming a flood was coming and the people mocked and laughed at him ... the question is, who do you believe?
There are more ways than the one for carbon to be released into the atmosphere depleting the planet of oxygen ... living creatures can not breathe/live without oxygen, so when the day comes and we can't breathe ... that will be the day, we will figure it out on who was telling and what the truth is.
The dinosaurs did not know they were going extinct; neither will man.

For 4.543 billion years, dead things have been buried under the ice ... when the ice melts from a planets warmth CO2 from their dead carcasses is released into the atmosphere ... we live on a world where it is all about balance and it isn't the crazy people that should be your concern but that balance that enables humans to live in this world.
This world is sandwiched between to sources of heat, the one above (sun) and the one in the (core of the earth) middle. Logic dictates in the laws of motion, something that is inevitable, in all things relevant to balance.
How crazy is crazy, as always will depend on one's perspective, that's all. There are always those who will warn, and there are always those who will ignore the warnings; history depicts the occurrence and what happens in the event.
