Then-candidate Trump said often that the Iraq War was a mistake, and that we were in too many places for too long. Fast-forward to 2019, and the president is now moving forward to stop the “endless wars.” I stand with him.
Except his stunt isn't going to get us out of anything according to General Petraeus.
These warring nomad tribes have been killing each other since man first migrated into the Tigris and Euphrates region. They are not likely to stop anytime soon.
On the other hand, the world has become a much smaller place. Politics, marketing, manufacturing, food supplies and energy all operate on a global scale. The effect of some back water conflict can potentially court disaster in ways detrimental to US interests.
The hard part is trying to determine if these global interests are truly detrimental to the US or simply detrimental to some rich persons bank account. Putting American lives and resources on the chopping block so some fat cat can get fatter needs to stop.
Middle East problems, like a lot of things, needs to be left to it's own devices as much as possible. We can watch from a distance and make sure any threat to us is beat back, but their wars won't end unless they hit rock bottom.
The United States needs to pull troops out of the Middle East completely. We have no business being there. Arabs and Muslims do not particularly like Americans or western culture. That is not our turf. Let them solve their own problems.
Only get involved if they attack us or our allies directly. Otherwise, no involvement.
The problem with that is we are addicted to their Oil hence our involvement in the Middle East.
Then we have to deal with the other elephant in the room which is religion and Israel.
The issue is a lot more complicated than we care to admit no matter what political side you are on.
After the Russians were defeated in Afghanistan, why in the world did we think we could win. And now what, 18 years later (or is it 19) we have won nothing.
Bin Laden was there hence the justification to go into Afghanistan.
All of this could have been handled by special OPs like they did when Obama finally did get Bin laden.
