Farmers and ranchers struggle with a prolonged downturn in the farm economy that's been made worse by unfair retaliatory tariffs on US agriculture as well as two consecutive years of adverse planting, growing and harvesting conditions," said John Newton, the chief economist at the federation.

Ahead of the 2020 elections, the president has increasingly attempted to placate farmers who helped elect him in 2016. The Trump administration has announced nearly $30 billion in bailout programs designed to mitigate losses from the trade dispute.

But the unprecedented amount of government aid has raised concerns about misuse of funds and drawn backlash from agricultural groups and bipartisan lawmakers. Roughly 40% of farm income is expected to come from government aid, according to Department of Agriculture data analyzed by the federation.

"The trend is a concern," Newton said. "The support provided to farmers in 2018 and 2019 is expected to alleviate some of the financial stress; however, not all farmers will benefit from trade assistance, farm bill programs, crop insurance or disaster aid."

Guess whose paying for this bailout?? I’m sure this is Obama or Hillary’s fault.

So it went up about 100 filings in the entire country and that includes 17 from Puerto Rico.

Not nearly as bad as you want it to be but you tried hard.

American workers are paying less in tax than before Trump was elected. So no, Americans are not toiling to bail out the farmers. We are creating more debt perhaps, but that never bothered lefties before. The well being of our farmers is worth taking into consideration, so I don't mind the idea of temporary aid to assist them.

There is no sense in putting the producers of food out of business, since we all like to eat. And they must be doing something right, because food has not risen in cost the way health care and other things we buy have. And comparing food expenses of our nation vs other countries, we aren't doing bad at all. No shortage of fat people here to attest to the good work of our nation's farmers.

I work for a living. I know many others who work for a living who support what Trump is doing. Most believe the tariffs should have been put in place many years ago. Heck, I know many democrats who feel that way about the tariffs. Since they've waited so long, and we've bled away so much of our productive industries, the trade war will have a deeper and longer impact on the US economy, but this is what happens when you kick the can down the road instead of dealing with the issue upfront. I would rather us deal with it now than hand an even bigger mess off to the next generation.

Lots of support for Trump in farm country by the way.

Democrats have entire families of able bodied adults living entirely off the government, even illegals. The farmers deserve the help because they at least get up off their arse and contribute something of value and worth to this world. It's important that we do not abandon these people, as they have done a very good job doing what they do. Just look at the bounty of fat people in America. Damn fine work by the farmers, making food cheap and plentiful for the masses. Democrats couldn't possibly fulfill their promises of subsidized and sometimes free food for low income families without the humble and hard working farmers of America.
