An apparent step-up of receipt and shopping bag checks at Walmart has sparked customer complaints, raising concerns about shoppers' rights.
"It was not a request, it was a demand," said Penny Rintoul of Vaughan, Ont., about a recent receipt check just before she exited Walmart with her purchases. She said her local Walmart increased its checks in the spring.
It’s disheartening to witness Americans becoming such world-class complainers. There is nothing, I mean NOTHING, that we can’t whip up some outrage over.
It’s embarrassing to watch adults behave this way. This is what good nutrition, warm homes, and good health have led us up to. Endless complaining.

You just got checked out, blew a wad of cash, then someone rummages through your bags and scrutinizes your purchase. Yeah, nothing bothersome about that..
Private business doing what it needs to do because the legal system cant/wont.
In some parts of the country a perp can waltz out of front door of a store with unpaid merch. and the cops wont bother to show up if called, nor will the da prosecute if the perp is actually apprehended.
Now if the perp is known to have an "illegal" substance on them...fire up the chopper and mobilize the SWAT team!
It's been that way for twenty years. Don't like it, don't shop there.
Exactly. They wouldn't be using staffing resources and risking loss of customer goodwill unless they felt they had a significant issue with shrinkage.
Having said that, although I have always had to show my receipt at Sam's and Costco, having to do it at Walmart is something I didn't ever have to do until just a few months ago.

They don't do that where I live, only store I recall having this happen is Best buy once and that was ridiculous since the checkout was about 15 feet away and I was only one getting checked out. The guy glanced at receipt and I left.
I would imagine at stores where there is high rates of theft it's more common.
Costco always does that and it's just a minor irritation. Our local Walmart spot checks which can anger people....a lady before me was getting checked and I just walked by and wasn't and she started angrily questioning why she was checked and I wasn't. In this case, Costco is set up to do the receipt checks and Walmart with multiple exits is not.
One form of store theft is cashiers inputting the wrong info, which can lead to a lower price being rung up. This is one reason why stores sometimes check receipts as you exit. It’s not always shoppers they are worried about.
