This guy walked up to two random little kids in Target and hammered them in the face. But he was using drugs.
Why do we punish people like this??? He was high on drugs. I'm sure that he is actually a nice guy....
But your right, punishment for addiction isn’t the way to go.
Addiction is a symptom of a bigger problem and addiction can vary. Addiction is usually a coping mechanism. So some people become addicted to eating or smoking or just hard drugs.
Some people are already sick and if they’re on the street, the only thing to cope with those voices is drugs.
He needs to be punished for attacking an innocent child but addicts mostly need treatment. I don't have much sympathy for them because they knew what they were getting into. They either have a death wish or they just don't want to be responsible enough to face up to real life.
If we can't afford to treat them (and apparently there isn't enough money to treat all of them?) then at least they need to be taken away and kept away from the rest of society. Otherwise they'll drag other people down and we'll have even more drug addicts.

The worst is people pulled over for DUI that only used prescription or OTC meds. https://www.orangecountyduilawyerblo...edication-dui/ But drunk or high or whatever, this person assaulted two people. That is breaking the law regardless of mental state.

Addiction and mental illness, a couple of things that plaque our society. These people need help, yet we let them live among us with the promise that they will seek help or take medications. Instead, they should be in a hospital...which I think we did 30 or 40 years ago.
Drug addiction often has something to do with boredom and being unable to find something legitimate to relieve it. If you have an enjoyable job to do, you are less likely to mess it up and lose it by getting on drugs.

So if he was drunk and ran over the kid with his car, that would be ok?
Why do we punish people like that? They are drunk on booze.
He just needs treatment. He was on drugs, so he shouldn't be sent to jail for this. He should get treatment instead.
We are so sick.......we punish sick people and send them to jail!!
