He was going to be primaried by another Democrat due to his impeachment stance and his poll numbers were terrible in the D primary. So he decided to switch parties rather than lose to another D in the Dem primary.
Van Drew’s decision to oppose impeachment — and his willingness to proclaim his views on the GOP-friendly Fox News Channel — badly alienated Democratic voters in his district, sparking a primary challenge that threatened his prospects for reelection. Brigid Callahan Harrison, a Montclair State University political science professor, signaled last month that she is likely to run for the Democratic nomination.
...results of a Dec. 7-10 survey of likely Democratic voters commissioned by Van Drew’s campaign, found that only 24 percent thought he should be reelected, with 58 percent wanting another Democrat nominated for the seat.
By switching parties, he's confirming what the majority of democrats who would not reelect him have been thinking-----that he's unreliable and not someone they want to represent them. But they'll have to admit making a bad mistake, by voting for him in the past. If he somehow wins nomination for the next term as a republican, there will be a big upsurge in democratic turnout for the election in that district of New Jersey. Although the state as a whole is strongly democratic, this issue might inspire the election of even more democrats in other districts, that have been more republican in the past. He's making a mistake by aggravating democratic voters statewide.

Democrats cleared the field for him in 2018
Polling showed he wasnt going to win a primary, Dems were already publicly going after him in his own district, and the DNC said it wouldnt support him in a primary if he didnt support impeachment.
As a state, New Jersey swung the furthest of any away from Trump and Republicans on a congressional level.
it went from 7-5 to 11-1.
Mind you, when Barack Obama was elected, Dems only won 55% on the congressional level and only won 8 seats. in 2018, they did it with 59% and won 11 seats and less than a 100,000 vote difference in those count.
Our job is impeachment. Your job is to elect honest people. You failed in 2016.
So now we’re gonna send a message to your failed messiah. Next time do better, bud.
oh my lollers.
First, the Dems job since Nov 2016 (or Jan 2017) was impeachment? Really?
Secondly, what is this "message", when everyone KNOWS the Dems haven't built a strong enough case that would pass the Senate?
