This could be Trump's achilles heel. While this war will be very popular with the far right, just as Iraq was until the very end, a majority of the country is going to be against it from the start. The unpopular war in Iraq played a role in Obama winning 2008 so decisively.

If it's a choice between war and peace or reckless vs sensible public policy, Dems will have an advantage in that they will be able to direct the campaign narrative away from social issues like abortion and LGBT rights.

The US is not going to fight a war with Iran, it has no reason to invade Iran.

If Iran attacks the US then the US will simply destroy it's airfield and airforce, take out it's small naval forces and probably take out it's oil fieds and other economic infrastructure.

The undemocratic Iranian Government is deeply unpopular in Iran, and it wouldn't take much for the people to rise up against it.

With Brutal Crackdown, Iran Is Convulsed by Worst Unrest in 40 years - The New York Times (1st December 2019)

As for the Iranian Government it now also has the problem of what to do next, as it knows it has promised revenge but knows attacking US Forces would just lead to a massive attack against Iran, and the Iranians are aware they are no match for the US and have other enemies in the region as well.

Sometimes when you attempt to intimidate people into submission, it’s a miscalculation. Of course you will win, but at a far greater cost than you can afford. The US has an economy that is a house of cards....it does not want to stir up winds.

The US economy is quite strong at the moment, unlike Iran which has a lot of sanctions.

The US is simply waiting to see what Iran's response will be, if they launch an attack it will be met by the destruction of intially 52 sites which the US will destroy in a few hours.

It's not going to be a full all on war, as Iran knows it would be totally destroyed within hours in such circumstances.

In terms of the US economy, US allies will stand by the US, whilst even countries like China could not afford to effect it's trade with the US, whilst Russia already has sanctions.

This will have zero effect on the US economy, indeed the US has it's own oil and gas supplies, and even if the action raised global energy prices the US would prosper.
