I’m shocked it is that high. I don’t think you would get a significantly different result in my country.
It isn’t that high in reality.
If I showed a world map to 1000 Americans walking down Random Street USA and asked them to point out Iran, about 50 people at BEST could do so. And that’s being generous.
If you asked that same 1000 Americans to name the Kardashians or pick out members of the British Royal Family, 75% could do so with flying colors.
Iran and Iraq have gone through many name changes in history. If you told someone you had a Persian rug, they would have no idea what that is. There is so much history to be taught these days that you can't cover it all. Do we want American history to be thoroughly taught or do we want world history. College is where you can choose what you want focus go. My son majored in history because that was his passion. He can name every single country in the world and tell you the history of each one of them. And some say a liberal arts degree is a waste.

The people that say it’s a waste have no degree and couldn’t get into college anyway.

I think you are probably right. And I think it would be similar here, certainly in younger age groups.

In the United States, If I isolated it to people 30 and under, about 10 people in a thousand might get it right. I can’t emphasize enough to you how dull the overwhelming majority of Americans are. I’m not exaggerating. The booboisie as described by Mencken reigns supreme in this country.

That’s America in a nutshell.
I think 50 is an exaggeration though. That would mean that only 5% would be able to. That's way too low regardless of how you look at it. I think it's got to be closer to 500, which is still low mind you if less than 50% of people can place a large country such as Iran on a map, then the education system needs a serious revamp.
It's pretty bad in Canada and Australia as well like Aussiehoff mentioned.
