“I definitely think that the gap between rich and poor in this country is much too large, that we've destroyed the middle class, and that the very wealthy people ought to be paying more in taxes and corporations,” Kennedy Jr. told Yahoo Finance’s editor-in-chief, Andy Serwer.
This from a guy who's uncle (really his entire family) is the chief architect of the 1965 Immigration Act - the one thing that has contributed more than anything to destroying the middle-class.
Both parties have destroyed the middle class via illegal immigration and neoliberal economic ideology. It’s not just the Democrats.
Each party blames the other (to get votes), but in reality, both parties are responsible.
I actually agree. But I would say liberal/democrat policies in general were more the impetus for all of it. Neocons have just sort of been apathetic to the destruction.

The New Deal was responsible for creating the middle class.
The movement to get rid of the New Deal (and thus, the middle class) started with Barry Goldwater in 1964. The movement has largely succeeded, although it hasn’t (yet) been able to get rid of Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare. They are trying hard, though.

Agreed.
And it gets even deeper. Not just the USA they destroyed, the war on drugs and the never ending wars in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, etc adds to the problems. We destroy countries with our policies so the citizens have no choice but to flee to the USA.

Back in the 80s and 90s there were protests all over against trade with China.
They were accused of being business hating liberals against "free trade" by the chamber of commerce and big business types.
I sure the repeal of Glass Steagal, creation of Federal Reserve system, etc etc had something to do with that wealth disparity too.
Not to mention weakening of unions and hollowing out of industries/outsourcing.
