They usually start of as a comment that on face value makes sense. At no point would the phrase "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" meant succeed by your own efforts.
It's as backwards as "I could care less."
Even something as dumb as "raining cats & dogs" probably started out as some metaphor that was self-explanatory in context.

Is "Trumpette" your lackluster attempt at an insult? I'm a libertarian, not a "Trumpette". Voted for Gary Johnson in 16, will more than likely vote third party in 2020. I have zero issue with pointing out the stupidity on both sides, it's just that Democrats are making too easy of a target to pass right now. Low hanging fruit and all that, you know?
