Clearly very few posters here read the article. First of all, while the church as a legal entity may not pay taxes, its employees (including ministers) most certainly do. Second, this is a payroll loan, meaning it goes to the organization to ensure the employees still get paid. The employees of a church still have bills, still buy things, and pay taxes on those things, why should they take a hit just because of their chosen [legal] employment? Even if you disagree with their employment, it's still legitimate. As a conservative Christian, I oppose Planned Parenthood, but I support their employees being aided in this time just as much as any other employee of any other organization (not that they'll get help from this particular program, just in general). Third, churches still do a lot of good in this world, a quick browse of the news shows them stepping up during this time. Many of you I'm sure would just say "let them use their funds for payroll then!" but that would likely end the church.

Small businesses pay taxes including property taxes, churches don't. If religious orgs want to be treated like businesses, they need to pay all of their taxes like businesses.
I could get behind it if they lost their tax exemption status. Great idea!
After the Trump era, I don't know how any rational person could deny that it's time to tax the churches. I used to be against it but have come to believe that if they want a say in our public policy and if they want government assistance, they should at least be paying taxes.
It might help to remind you that churches do a lot of charity work, like supporting food banks. Not only that but many provide schools to communities that are subsidized by the congregation. IF the schools close, then the obligation for the education of all those children falls on the local school district. In some more religious areas of America, that could amount to several thousand students. The school district might even have to build some new schools. But if you still are against it, then you'd have to make the rule against all kinds of nonprofits, since many churches also support adoption agencies and other social services.

Good News: The River Church, a Florida megachurch led by controversial Pastor Rodney Howard-Browne, has lost their insurance after holding services during the coronavirus pandemic, ignoring safety guidelines and placing the community at risk.
Orlando Weekly reports:
Rodney Howard-Browne, the head pastor at the River at Tampa Bay Church, who was arrested for holding services during the coronavirus pandemic, said he will not open his megachurch this weekend over fear of his congregation’s safety and to protect them from “government tyranny.” However, his lawyer is now saying he also lost his insurance.
Just to keep things on the level here, those opportunities exist for leaders of any faith. Use of the word "pastor" suggests something very different, and it's a tactic the media is infamous for using to create "fake news" narratives.

Genuine charitable donations are tax deductible. The business that my wife works for donates cars to hospice, does volunteer days for habitat for humanity and local park repairs, donates computer labs to schools, built the new humane society building, among many other things. They still have to pay taxes.
Are you referring to parishioner tithing that are then distributed to fund missionary work worldwide?
Christians give out of their hearts for the love of the Lord, not in an exchange for goods or services.
