Certainly I am not condoning what was said here, it was witnessed by multiple people and also caught on camera. He certainly had no business saying that at all.

However, it is a bit bothersome that the police were called and now they are investigating the incident. Why is the police investigating over this? No matter how vile bigoted speech is (against any entity), what crime was committed here that warrants a full police investigation (besides the knee jerk reaction in this current political climate of ours)?

Now, if the guy in addition to slurs threatened violence against the teen or assaulted him, sure, I can see police involvement. But simply yelling slurs at another to me doesn't warrant police involvement unless you believe in criminalizing hate speech by itself. And this goes for any similar incidents regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, religion, etc.

Police are investigating an incident where a Black teen was called offensive racial slurs after offering a white man a doughnut in Newburyport, Massachusetts, according to the Boston Globe.

The 14-year-old, Peter Osazuwa, offered strangers extra doughnuts after he realized there were leftovers from his Dunkin Donuts order, the report said. The incident, which was caught on video, occurred last week, according to local reports.

Osazuwa's mother, Adama Berry, told the Boston Globe that her son was with friends when he was called racial slurs after he offered a white man a doughnut.

I agree that the police don't need to be involved. Social media will (rightfully) make his life really unpleasant - - that's enough.

Article did not mention who called the cops. I think that's probably the most important part of the story, and without it, the whole story is worthless.

But why racial slurs anyway? Why take it so far? You can't expect to throw negative energy into the world and receive positive energy back, that's just not how things work.

Well, we're not sure who called the police. Sounds like the incident got pretty loud and heated, and in a public place with dozens of people probably watching, some random person not involved with the situation whatsoever maybe called police out of fear.

But I agree with Tristram. Social media will handle this just fine. I haven't seen the video, but if the man who used racial slurs is on camera, Facebook will rightfully find out his identity and destroy him.

Wow. What a jerk. Not sure why this is a news story or why it's appropriate for the police to get involved though.

do you suppose a white teen being called a racial slur would merit a police response and a boston globe story?

1- Who called the police?
-Whoever it was, what an idiot.
2- Who decided the police should open an investigation on it?
-Whoever it was, what an idiot.
3- Who thought this was worthy of being a news story?
-Whoever it was, what an idiot.

I think maybe because he was a child... if it had been an adult - it would have passed. Maybe they want to assure that man did not do any further harm. Kids will shut up if afraid.

I guess "No thank you, I don't want a doughnut" would have been too hard to say.

If an adult man flips out on a teenager whose only "crime" was to offer him a doughnut, who knows how unhinged he might be. I think that calling the police was the correct response.
