Highlights announced so far from current releases of the new Pentagon plan include -
5,600 American troops now in Germany to move to other NATO countries, mainly Belgium and Italy.
6,400 US troops to move back to the United States.
2nd Cavalry to move back to the US from Rose Barracks in Vilseck in Germany - the 2nd Cavalry is one of only two front line combat units in Europe, the other being the 173rd Airborne in Italy. There will however be a rotational cavalry units in Poland instead of the 2nd Cav in Germany.
USAF Spangdahlem in Germany toend current mission with the F-16 Squadron deployed to USAF Aviano in Italy
USAF Mildenhall in England to remain open and home to the 100th Air Refueling Wing and the 352nd Special Operations Wing, with the the 95th Reconnaissance Squadron and 488th Intelligence Squadron relocating to USAF Fairford in England.
EUCOM, which oversees all U.S. military efforts on the continent, will move its 600 troops and 300 civilians from its Stuttgart headquarters to a location in Mons, Belgium, with further additional HQ units also predicted to move from Germany to Mons in Belgium.
AFRICOM also in Stuttgart to move out of Germany to an as yet unnamed location, although it could also be heading to Mons in Belgium or even back to the US.
US Defense Secretary Esper said the plan is to consolidate US headquarters in countries in Europe outside Germany, such as NATO bases in Belgium and Italy.
According to US EUCOM and NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Tod Wolters, some of the key headquarters currently based in Germany will be brought to NATO’s SHAPE headquarters in Mons, Belgium, including possibly EUCOM HQ, while two other battalions will go to Italy.
At the same time, both officials also confirmed that the US Africa Command (US AFRICOM), also headquartered in Stuttgart, “might soon relocate to a location to be determined”, but here “discussions have a long way to go”.
The plan would fulfill President Donald Trump’s demands to remove thousands of troops from Germany, which he has long derided as delinquent on its defense spending obligations within NATO. The announcement also comes after a monthslong review of American force strength in Europe, where some troops are permanently stationed and others deploy on rotational tours to train alongside NATO allies in an effort to deter Russian aggression on the continent.
“It is important to note that in NATO’s 71-year history, the size, composition and disposition of U.S. forces in Europe has changed many times,” Esper said during a Pentagon news briefing. “As we’ve entered a new era of great-power competition we are now at another … inflection point in NATO’s history. I am confident the alliance will be all the better and stronger for it.”
I guess we are finally realizing T-72's won't be rolling through the Fulda Gap anytime soon. Time to right size and redeploy the military where it is needed for the future. Good for Trump.
To do Putin`s bidding? He doesn`t want our troops in Germany either.
Or
It's time to let Germany foot the bill for their own defense. I like Germany and respect their education system. That said I wouldn't keep hanging out with a friend who mooched off me for decades. Germany is that friend who mooches.
I would bring our troops home, and amend the constitution to let our military secure our southern border.
Use our Navy to secure our waters.
Use the Air Force to actually secure our airspace.
If a country wants to host our military to increase their own security they should foot the entire bill for it.
This is why I voted for Trump and why I will vote for him again!
Putin also came forth to thank Trump.
IMO it doesn't make much of a difference since we have so few left in Germany anyway. Just another deflection from bigger issues.

1st stage? We have pulled out over 90% since the 1990s. When Clinton did it, it was called "gutting the military".
Germany has been a useful staging point, and had military hospitals etc to treat our wounded on that part of the world (Iraq, Afghanistan, etc), but apparently not needed anymore.

The US Hospital and logistics/supply and transportation facilities in the Ramstein area will remain.
The main proposals are moving the Cavalry Brigade back to the US on readiness to reinforce if needed and a rotational Stryker brigade in Poland.
There will also be the movement of F-16's currently based at Spangdahlem in Germany with the planes moving to Aviabo in Italy.
The rest so far involves moving headquarters units from Stuttgart in Germany to SHAPE at Mons in Belgium.
In terms of the US Africa Command, the obvious place to move it is nearer to Africa, with Spain, Southern Italy and Greece all being more sensible locations than Stuttgart. Although moving Africa Command to Florida the US has also been considered in the past.
