New Zealand is truly one of the most isolated places on Earth. Here is a world map that show where New Zealand is. If you cannot isolate and insulate a remote island nation like New Zealand from a virus like the Wuhan virus, then you cannot do it anywhere with that has any significant population.

New Zealand extends new coronavirus lockdown in largest city after community spread

After more than 100 days of there not being a locally transmitted COVID-19 case, New Zealand is now extending sweeping lockdowns in its largest city and elsewhere after a spike in infections.

On Tuesday, four new locally transmitted cases of the coronavirus were found among a single family within the southern area of Auckland. Since then, approximately 30 others have now been infected through community spread by a new strain of the coronavirus, according to the international news agency Agence France-Presse.

"This suggests it's not a case of the virus being dormant, or of burning embers in our community, it appears to be new to New Zealand," said New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on the outbreak.
Remember the TDS crowd insisting that President Trump had failed, because places like Japan and New Zealand had successfully avoided community spread of this virus? Well, it was just a matter of time and now both places have imposed their own measures as community spread has begun.

A couple of facts about the Wuhan virus:

1. It is extremely virulent and it spreads very fast. Once it establishes itself in a population, there is not much that can be done to stop it spreading.
2. For the vast majority of people, it is not very dangerous at all. People who are older and have other morbidities need to take precautions. For everyone else, it is not significantly more dangerous than driving on the public roadways.

This virus continues to mutate and produce new strains, as viruses tend to do. We cannot cower and hide from this virus until it somehow goes away. We have to go through this. Life is full of risks and we are all forced to confront many of them. Including this.

Some people around here owe President Trump an apology, in light of these more recent developments.

Taiwan has five times the population of New Zealand and is 1/7 the size. It’s 100 miles from China and citizens and residents are free to come and go.

It’s never had a lockdown. Schools and businesses have remained open and operating normally the whole time. The last case of domestic transmission of COVID-19 was in April. The last death was in May. 7 people out of a population of 24 million have died of COVID-19.

“It’s the (real, medical grade) face masks, stoopid.”

Well, a number of weeks ago, it was Japan, New Zealand, Korea, and Taiwan on that list. Now the first three have been scratched off and it is down to Taiwan.

How much longer before Taiwan is scratched off of this list as well, I wonder?

If it is scratched off the list it will be because people here have become too lax about wearing face masks in public. I’m seeing that already. Everyone here is acting like the pandemic is over and other than on public transportation most are no longer following the basic precautions that beat the pandemic.

The virus is just too virulent. It spreads too easy. People cannot maintain this state of panic and fear over the long term.

This is nowhere near the worst virus or bacterial contagion we have faced, and it is not going to just go away. We cannot run from this forever. We have to go through this.

So when Taiwan does ultimately get hammered by this virus, that will just make them like all of the rest of us.

The first death from COVID-19 here in Taiwan occurred two weeks before the first death in the U.S. That was when thousands of Taiwanese who had been working in China flooded back into the country to escape the pandemic there.

Don’t forget Vietnam.

Vietnam population is almost 100 million people.

From March til late July they only had 400+ cases of infection, 0 death.

From late July until now they have 900+ cases (500 increase), 22 deaths

NZ reporting this is a NEW strain of coronavirus, not Covid 19.

Auckland has fallen back to Level 3- Stay home except for essential business. Construction, transportation, food services will proceed. A new wave of income support initiatives has been issued.

The rest of the country is at Level 2, social distancing recommended.

Lockdown is an abused term.
