I don't think you understand what a moderate is. We don't always vote party lines. We don't vote for extremists on either side. Personally, I vote for someone who brings both parties together with their ideas for us all. I have voted for both parties. Our blue state elected a republican governor and re elected him because he's a moderate who appeals to all of us.
The expansion of Big Government and the parasitic bureaucracy which feeds on the taxpayer never "solves" problems; it merely transforms them into a permanent fixture.

Because progressive is a section of the Democratic party, they are not liberals or moderates; but they share some common beliefs with the aforementioned two. Thus, they have their own wing - the Progressive wing.
Progressives tend to overlap more with the liberals than the moderates. While the moderates have more in common with the liberals.
AOC is a progressive. Harris is a liberal. Biden is a moderate.

They call themselves progressives because they think it sounds positive for them.
Progress has a positive connotation to it. I think of it more as change, progressives want change. Some of those changes end up being bad and other ones are good. The political meaning has changed through time.
Conservatives want to preserve. Again, there are good things you can preserve and also bad ones. Conserve has a slightly positive connotation to it, but not as much as progress.
Liberal generally doesn’t sound great as being liberal with something means not taking care of it.

The word "progressive" has positive connotations, and very little of the Democrats' philosophy is positive. In fact, if all their programs were implemented, the country would go totally bankrupt. Is it progressive to get everything given to you free?
One may have been able to argue that once, but the GOP has embraced deficit spending.
