A neighbor of mine lost her 98 year old mother THIS WEEK. Mother died in a Hospice where she was transferred to from a nursing home. Neighbor had not been allowed to visit her mother in person for the past 9 months. The hospice did not allow her to be with her mother before or as she passed. There was no intermediate hospitalization.

Nursing home acquired infections are likely underreported everywhere.

NY, like most states, last spring, required nursing homes to house residents who tested positive WHEN it had adequate PPE and could isolate infected residents from the general population. Most nursing homes are privately- owned for profit businesses. Most nursing homes are dependence to on Medicaid for a variable portion of their income. Medicaid typically pays on a per diem basis. This income offsets the cost of operating the facility and a profit for the owning entity.

Obviously, nursing homes in NY and every other state trend chronically understaffed and compliance with county/ state infection control requirements are a huge variable, down to shift and individual employee.

We know with certainty, there was an acute shortage of PPE in hospitals and nursing homes. We know contaminated PPE was being used. We know that in some facilities, employees were wearing hefty bags We know that nursing home acquired infections were and remain a huge risk.

Over time, most county public health departments required nursing homes to cease allowing in person. visitors. So how come nursing home residents continue to be the most vulnerable population, regardless of state?

Nursing home employees bring Covid into the facilities. The persistent shortage of test kits means these employees are rarely adequately tested before their shift. We know the so called quick tests have a higher false negative/ positive rate than more intensive tests that have a lag time between testing and results.

Those employed at nursing homes typically don’t live on site. They, like most people, don’t mask up in their homes or maintain distance from their family members or room mates. Like many others, they may be gathering with friends and family. And likely there are some who persist in the belief Covid is a media hoax, no diff than some people everywhere.

State/ county health departments periodically inspect licensed nursing homes. That infection control procedures exist and were observed at 10:00 AM, does not mean every employee is in compliance 24/7.

Most nursing home employees are semi- skilled and trend low wage and may or may not have any benefits, including paid sick leave. No hours= no pay. Nursing home employees are among the most under appreciated jobs.

Appreciate the challenge of operating the business when say, 50% of staff is out sick.

Again, residents of nursing homes were and remain sitting ducks and the most vulnerable.
