Axios isn't totally dismissing the possibility. They supposedly target a moderate audience.
Quote:
Reality check: While Baker noted suspicious circumstances — like the fact that Wuhan is the only Chinese city that has a maximum security biosafety lab, where work had been done in the past on bat coronaviruses — there is little conclusive evidence in the piece that the virus originated in a lab.

"This article is filled with wild speculation about SARS-CoV-2's origins and signifies a lack of understanding around basic genetics and viral evolution," tweeted Nsikan Akpan, a pathobiologist and health and science editor at the radio station WNYC.
Yes, but: Speculation aside, there are still major questions about how COVID-19 emerged.

An AP investigation last week found Beijing has heavily censored research into origins of SARS-CoV-2, even as Chinese state media has pushed theories that the virus first emerged overseas.

The big picture: Baker is right to note the growing risk posed by gain of function experiments that involve creating new, more virulent or contagious strains of existing viruses in the lab in an effort to predict and prepare for future pandemics.

Lab accidents are rare, but they do occur — and as modifying viruses becomes easier and easier, the existential consequences of those accidents will grow.

Someone must be using freedom of information to access documents to find out whose idea this was.
maybe that's how the US knew about this before the chinese govt did, in nov 2019.

And it's not a nutty conspiracy theory like some would have you believe. Back in April Newsweek published this:

Dr. Fauci Backed Controversial Wuhan Lab with U.S. Dollars for Risky Coronavirus Research

I have long felt that dr fauci was the insurance policy

how is china incompetent when they handled the outbreak far, far, far better than we did?

oh, is it because they had a bioleak?

SARS escaped Beijing lab twice

Laboratory safety at the Chinese Institute of Virology under close scrutiny

https://www.the-scientist.com/news-a...ab-twice-50137

That was known back in 2004.

And China is certainly lying about how many of their people have died from covid.

Quote:
Even as data on infections and mortality continue to pour in, the rapid and sudden decline in China's COVID-19 statistics has raised widespread skepticism. The importance of this data for an epidemiological understanding of the disease, given its origin in China, mandates that accurate figures should be provided. However, the researchers say, "China's COVID-19 statistics fall outside of recognized and accepted medical norms."

Earlier researchers have also pointed out mathematically "impossible" COVID-19 figures from China's establishment, estimating that over 85% of infections were not reported and that by February 20, 2020, the number of confirmed cases in China would have been well over 230,000 and not 55,000 as officially reported.
They are saying only 5000 people have died in China but:

Quote:
A resident of Hubei province, of which Wuhan is the capital, said most people there now believe that more than 40,000 people died in the city before and during the lockdown.

Here we go again with the half truths and conspiracy theories.

Read: npr "Why The U.S, Government Stopped Funding A Research Project on Bats and Coronaviruses."

Trump shut it down just as he disbanded our Pandemic Response Office in 2018. Why?

The project identified hundreds of spill over coronaviruses and cold have made the difference in early vaccines.

Look, we know it's just a matter of time before this happens again. Pulling funding from projects where these viruses originate could pose a national security risk. We need to know what's out there and we have to work together globally to be prepared. Cutting funding for these projects and disbanding our pandemic response team? Idiotic. Eyes on the geopolitical adversary? Better than boots on the ground.

Fauci should at least get a pay cut. He's one of the highest paid federal employees.

As noted in an NPR story published last week, many scientists have discounted that theory as nearly impossible.
NEARLY impossible ain't IMPOSSIBLE. Like I noted SARS escaped from Chinese labs TWICE.

Quote:
Due to the gravity of SARS-CoV-2 impact on humanity, researchers have the responsibility to carry
out a thorough analysis, beyond any personal research interests, of all possible causes for SARS-CoV-
2 emergence. Unfortunately, theories that consider a possible artificial origin for SARS-CoV-2 are
censored by international scientific journals as they seem to support conspiracy theories. Genetic
manipulation of SARS-CoV-2 may have been carried out in any laboratory in the world with access to
the backbone sequence and the necessary equipment. New technologies based on synthetic genetics
platforms even allow the reconstruction of viruses based on their genomic sequence, without the
need of a natural isolate
https://www.researchgate.net/publica...st_be_censored

The genetic structure of SARS‐CoV‐2 does not rule out a laboratory origin

SARS‐COV‐2 chimeric structure and furin cleavage site might be the result of genetic manipulation
