The collapse of the Soviet Union thirty years ago freed more people in one stroke, than the Biblical Jewish Exodus from Egypt or the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1945 in the Japanese-occupied Philippines.

Liberals in the U.S. are either ignorant of the whole thing, or trying to brush it all under the rug and pretend that the destruction of their far-left style of government in one of the largest countries on Earth is no big deal, nothing to see here, move along now.

Warsaw Pact Formally Ends Its Military Role : Alliance: Eastern European leaders gather in Budapest to make final arrangements to wipe out a 35-year enslavement to the Kremlin.

BUDAPEST, Hungary —
It was a funeral at which no tears were shed and those paying respects could hardly be called bereaved.
The 35-year-old Warsaw Pact was buried Monday with little ceremony and less regret, formally ending Eastern Europe’s military enslavement to the Kremlin.

It was in Hungary that tanks and troops quashed the 1956 anti-Communist revolt in the name of the Eastern European defense bloc, earning the Warsaw Pact the hatred and fear of those it ostensibly sought to protect. The invasion of Czechoslovakia 12 years later and the intrusion into Polish domestic politics during the early years of the Solidarity trade union movement built on the alliance image as a Kremlin instrument for repressing those trying to escape communism’s smothering embrace.

In an unemotional eulogy for the guests at the final meeting, Jeszenszky noted that some politicians continue to defend the Warsaw Pact as a force that contributed to the peace and stability enjoyed in Europe since the end of World War II. “More numerous are those, however, who characterize it as an organization resting on mistaken fundamentals which has outlived itself,” Jeszenszky said.

Why would you think liberals in the US are far left? Biden, as an example is centerist at best (if not a bit right leaning) by international standards.

Not too interested in supposed "international standards". I didn't know they had any. Sometime I hear things from the press in other countries, that would out-silly the silliest of American people. "Standards", they aren't.

For example, I ran into a guy who thought Joe Biden and his administration was a centrist, or even a little right-leaning. Can't get much more loopy than that.

I hope.

But you never know. People from outside this country, seem to think their "standard" is moving to the left at an ever-increasing pace. For all I know, they may be telling me in a few weeks or months, that Kamala Harris is "centrist".

How can that be called a "standard" if it's always changing?

Got to watch out. You can make a silly joke about a liberal today. And next time, sooner than you'd ever think possible, they are acting as though what you joked about, is a true representation. They might even be calling it a "standard" by then, as though it's always been true.

Such people are a laugh a minute. But a "standard", they aren't.

The original post literally compared the US to another country. The topic of this thread is based on comparing the US internationally.

So again, where did the idea that liberals in the US are far left, in comparison to the rest of the world come from? Do you have a source I could read (an article comparing political beliefs across countries, etc.) that was the basis for this? (if this thread is your opinion, that's obviously fine, but if you have data to back it up, I'd be interested in reading it)

No, it implied that the USSR sucked by any measure.

Bzzzztt, wrong. But thanks for playing.....

Back to the subject:
The USSR formally died thirty years ago, freeing millions of people. I think I'll bake a cake in celebration. Anyone want to join in?

Unfortunately, warmed-over old-style Soviet Socialists have been trying to worm their way back in ever since and rebuild the old Soviet Union.
