Its funny how conservatives always say this when the topic is about paying the little guy. Yet when the federal govt bails out big businesses all we hear is crickets.

It's still irrelevant. (And if I remember correctly, minimum wage was raised shortly afterwards to $3.25 anyways)

When I was washing dishes for 2.90 in 79, I was a teenager, living at home.
I had virtually no expenses whatsoever. All the money I made that summer went into buying my first motorcycle.
That's what minimum wage jobs are for.
You gain work experience, while the employer doesn't have to pay a zero skills temporary worker more than the market allows for a given job.
That dynamic allows you to demand higher pay in your next position while keeping costs low for employers and their customers.

Your not supposed to be trying to support a family, or even yourself entirely on minimum wage.

In any event OP, here’s your answer in a nutshell. If your business model is dependent on paying less then “living wages,” time for a new model.

I gave an example upthread as to how I paid my receptionist $35,000 a year (this was before voice mail took off and phone calls were answered) and my part-timer doing simple work like typing labels for envelopes around $10. (My skilled professional earned $70,000.j What I would have done if I were forced to raise the part-timer to $15 would be to abolish her position, add her duties to the receptionist, offer the receptionist a raise to $40,000.
The result: The receptionist would be very happy with the 15% raise, and I would have saved a few thousand in compensation costs. The only one not happy would be the part-timer, who lost her job.
Now multiply that scenario by 10 or 20 million small businesses, and you’ll see the problem.
Or maybe the people with no skills need to work harder by going to night class to learn a trade. And NO....sweeping a floor is not a “skill.”

I'm not saying sweeping is on the same skill level as a vascular surgeon. But sweeping properly is a skill that must be learned. And one must have pride in their work. Trivializing the work it does not help the worker.
And $2.90 in 1979 adjusted for inflation is $11.16. The current minimum wage is $7.25.

P.S. One of my first chores was to sweep the floor, at around age 8. My mother showed me how to do it. She worked with me a bit, but after around 10 minutes, I got it down.
