For those wondering, the commute from Rahway is $270 per month.

Hopefully they do. Places like Amazon with their worker exploitation don't deserve to be in business. along with Walmart and the rest of these sweatshops where the tax payers have to subsidize them because the billionaires need to be even richer

Is that the train price?

But it’s still doable. She just can’t eat out, will have to pack her lunch, and live on a tight budget. But no reason she has to live in a car.

Like others have said, she needs to find some roommates or rent a room in somebody's s house. This is not rocket science.

Amazon didn't create that job to support someone. They created that job because they needed certain work done, and there are competent people willing to do the work for that much.

When did it become Amazon's responsibility to make sure its workers can support themselves in NYC?

Isn't that the workers' responsibility?

Sounds like she needs a roommate. I lived with roomies a lot when I was starting out. Is there some reason she can't?

Who knows where it goes?

Landlords require you to make three times the amount of rent in income a lot of the time.

I wouldn't want to live in NY anyway. She might be better off toughing it out and putting the money back and using it to move elsewhere and start over.

NYC definitely isn’t for her. Learn to get a goddamn roommate.

I lived in NYC and finances were the primary reason I moved out. Being fresh out of grad school with a dead economy I would have felt like I died and went to heaven if I was making $19 an hour full-time even if you reduced it to account for inflation.

Well, I feel for this person, but if they can’t live on that $19.30 a hour in NYC, they might need to think about moving to a location where say $10.00-$12.00 a hour, where you can survive on the bare basics, which includes an apartment, food and basic transportation.

She's making $40k a year, with a couple of roommates making the same they should be fine, even at the insane COL of the NY area. Or move elsewhere-no one is "entitled" to live in the most expensive areas of the country. At some point the companies are either forced to pay more to attract workers-or also move to better, more friendly, less costly environments.
Great post. Spot on. It is not a shock the area she picked is high cost.

I consider myself very lucky that I -only- pay $1670 for my 1br (and not some ghetto like the Bronx or Brownsville), my commute is inside of an hour, and maybe costs $250/mo accounting for both gas and insurance.

However, my rent has gone up from $1300 over 6 of the past 7 years, while my pay has not gone up at all for the past 5 years.

Eventually, and rather soon at that, I will have to move.
