Can be blamed on wildly successful capitalism. Which attracts people and all the pollution and crime that comes with a concentration of people anywhere. Which sprouts support for policies around the environment generally associated with the Democrats. Just look at what California was like before the smog prevention effort not all that long ago.

People do. Democrat policies generally arise in cities because the downsides of concentrations of people become apparent and must be dealt with.
That’s not as obvious to those living a rural life. Can have the burn pile going and just be a minor nuisance for a bit because there’s not 100,000 people in close proximity doing it at the same time.
Democrats have owned big cities lock, stock and barrel for generations now. And it shows.

And this is something that should be considered. What might work in the suburbs or rural areas won't work in large, crowded cities. Politics in big cities is a function of that fact that these are big, crowded cities.
This seems odd, because traditionally the GOP was the party of the rich, and this was associated with big cities. Or did Trump shift all that? Although Trump himself certainly comes off as a big-city guy.
Ignores the gains the GOP is making with Latin voters in urban and suburban areas. Miami-Dade flipped two House seats in 2020 and Biden won by a much smaller margin than Hillary there. California flipped a few seats back. In Virginia, polls show the '21 Governor's race a dead heat.
You don't see Dems campaigning on crime, you see them running away from positions they held a year ago. But it's still a problem because they're not gaining on the GOP in rural areas. 2022 could repeat the 2010 beatdown for the Dems, which is still being felt because it crushed a farm system of candidates who would be Presidential hopefuls by now. So instead we've had Hillary, Biden, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren. Meanwhile, GOP hopefuls post-Trump are led by 42 yo Ron DeSantis and 49 yo Nikki Haley. Far leftists like AOC and the Bomb Squad might excite the media and the DNC, but they certainly don't do it for the average voter.
With old candidates, gains in the Sunbelt starting to peak, and policies so extreme many of their own candidates forced to run away from them, I think the Dems will have a rough decade.
The only outstanding thing I have experienced as a life long New Yorker
is the more the City shifts Democratic the more of a WILDERNESS the city becomes.
I see more and more (wild animals) criminals roaming the streets.
