So much for your saying that mental illness is a serious topic.

If "racism" can cause mental illness, should such be taken into consideration in things like hiring? A candidate may have all the qualifications, but if he/she belongs to a group that has historically been a victim of racism, then his/her ability to perform his/her duties could be compromised. Think of work that requires a high level of competence and the ability to function under stress.

Or is this another one of those things where they don't really mean what they are saying.

A college roommate from a wealthy Italian-Irish family was schizophrenic. She went off the rails when she quit her meds cold turkey and wound up in an expensive mental hospital with rich and celebrity patients. Oh, the stories she told me when she got out . A real life Cuckoo's Nest but in a luxury hotel setting.

So racism alters peoples' perceptions and makes them paranoid and suspicious? Or could it be that paranoid, suspicious people with altered perception see more racists than actually exist?

* "racialized citizen" is Canada-speak for "a non-white person"

Conservatives typically shrug off most mental illness as a "spiritual" problem though, that can be cured with prayer and religion. This is especially true for schizophrenia, which most conservative Christians believe is actually demonic possession. Is that approach any better?

It's why most health insurance in this country doesn't cover mental healthcare.

Racism may cause paranoia but that's a different animal than Schizophrenia

"Paranoid Personality Disorder is more common than Schizophrenia. PPD is different than Paranoid Schizophrenia."

.

Can racism cause schizophrenia?

No, racism can not cause schizophrenia because schizophrenia is an organic disease. Schizophrenia can manifest in many ways.

But racism can certainly cause mental trauma and extreme paranoia that might be mistaken for schizophrenia by ignorant people.

Mental trauma and extreme paranoia don't cause schizophrenia either.

I don't know, the whole "microaggressions" thing sounds paranoid.
