You know why do they blame it on video games, heavy metal music or the like instead of blaming it on the parents who raised them?

Good lord. Tipper Gore 2.0. Didn't make sense then, doesn't make sense now. People want a one-stop easy explanation. Life is messier than that.

Y'all should read the Michigan school shooting thread to see some of the ridiculous reasons people here are giving. You're right, CrowGirl. People want easy answers, but there are none to this

It's always easier to blame The Devil, Ozzy, Judas Priest, porn, Helter Skelter, video games etc. than to just face up to fact that some kids/people are genetically compromised yielding significant psychological damage, it appears similar may result from head injures as well, and some suffer awful upbringings - some suffer all of that.

As you say life is messier.

All media is a reflection on our society.

When you try to ban certain media because it’s violent or sexual(of course there’s exceptions like revenge porn, CP, snuff movies or animal cruelty), it’s more like trying to wash your face by washing the mirror. It’s like saying your face is dirty because the mirror is dirty.

I don’t think even most boomers take the videogame argument that seriously anymore.
That's a great analogy. Music/video games/movies/etc are all reflections of our society. And quite often the uglier side of our society.

Yup.

I remember around the 80's early 90's people were blaming dungeons and dragons and heavy metal music for stuff like violence and suicides.

There are definately issues with gaming addicts but like most addicts their character, choices, health, life skills etc play a larger role than the game or chemical substance. There MIGHT be some correlation but causation from entertainment media isn't the issue many think it is.

And I say this as someone who has on going issues with loud nusiance neighbors playing electronic or video games sometimes 24/7. But they also have many of the traits of an addict including impulse control, substance abuse,, attention span issues etc.

The parents enabled this kid including giving into their impulse to please him instead of parenting him. They not only bought the kid a gun they gave him a luxury model when they should've started him on .22 caliber. The kid had few boundaries which execerbated other issues. There are also reports of him banging his head /collapsing at a diner job a year ago which be health or drugs.

Games, music, movies would have to be variables in a perfect storm of events, issues, personality traits and health to play the dominate role.

Of course they do! How predictable....

I occasionally will play a video game when I can get a good one on sale on Steam. I was just thinking about this topic the other day. Video games are one of the last bastions where sex and violence are often on full display.

Really it's only a matter of time before the liberal Karen's of the world put a halt to everybody's fun. You just KNOW it's coming! I'd give it 5 years. Libs are already trying to sink their fingernails into this topic. Tick tock! Enjoy your game while you can because soon it will be labeled sexist, racist, elitist blah blah blah. Vomitville, right?

Chutes and Ladders on VR sure sounds riveting doesn't it?

The question how much gaming did the parents allow not what he played. If they're letting him play more than an hour or two a day that's an issue-not because of content but children especially shouldn't be groomed or led to believe they can spend life in front of a screen. I'm from an era when plain old tv viewing was regulated by parents. I remember being told on more than one occassion go outside, see your friends, study, read a book etc they hated idle do nothing time and that was pushed until graduation.

Perhaps this is why he had trouble with his peers at school because instead of interacting with actual people he was in front of a tv screen playing games instead working on actual life skills-shouldn't need a class for that either.

Excessive game playing would be the issue, not the games themselves.
