And small two bedroom home in CA often costs a $700,000 yo a million dollars, is insanity. The average person living in California cannot afford to buy a home.
The average annual salary in Ca is $68,00 to $88,000. A couple buying a $700,000 single family home in CA, with 20% down, and 3.8% interest rate, will spend $30,000 a year on just mortgage payments alone, add another $3,000 to $4,000 a year for property taxes.
California is broken. The average person who works in cities like San Francisco cannot afford to live there.
It's ridiculous. I know a young couple who moved there. I know he makes great money, but I'm sure they aren't putting a whole lot of money in the bank. $700,000 for a house. That is ten times what my house cost. And that doesn't even include the interest!

Try more like $8-9k. If you bought in a Mello Roos district, double that.
And if you bought a SFR that's still standing in San Francisco, you've won the lotto. More like a 650 sqft one-bedroom where you owe $700/mo in HOA fees.
I'm basing my other numbers on mortgage calculator web sites, and internet searches for average salary in CA.
1.2-1.3% of your purchase price. Prop 13 keeps your taxes low over the long run but it's not so relevant when you've paid 6x what you should for your house to begin with.
That $2800 figure averages in people who owned their homes 60+ years and pay like $300 a year in property taxes.

You mean if you have owned your home for 30 years, it's all paid off, but has been assessed as worth $1.2 million, that you do not pay $5,000 or more a year in property taxes?

Increases are capped at 2% or something IIRC so theoretically the scenario you described is possible.
Laughing at some of the comments by people who think they know everything about California and home prices here. Probably the same people who think the entire state looks like LA. smh

You can’t blanket assign those numbers to a state the size of CA, that’s ridiculous. Are we talking Blythe or Laguna Beach? Big Bear or San Francisco? The state is too big for a post this silly to have any merit.
“...we'd have 40,000 more Californians dead if we took [DeSantis's] approach,” Newsom said after DeSantis attacked Newsom.
Newsom went on to say right wing politicians like DeSantis are performance artists who get on Fox TV and are "just playing in and placating the right-wing punditry. It’s the CPAC primary. It’s rather absurd. And that's why I respectfully submit that so much of this is pure performance.”
Meanwhile, California's booming economy is generating a $45.7 billion surplus for the upcoming fiscal year.
Doesn’t make Newsome any less of a simpering fool.
