Sure use leverage to push Europe to pay more for its defense and clearly get that point in. Trump went in disrespecting all of them leaving them clearly not knowing what hit them. It was 100% predictable that Bolton would trash Trump. He didn't like being hired just to make a statement, and being fired without having any of his advice taken must've been hugely insulting.
Trump never cared about Bolton's opinion - he hired him to signal that he'd be willing to drop bombs, if necessary. Everyone knows who Bolton is and what he wants, and it's that knowledge that Trump was playing off of when he brought Bolton on. Bolton didn't like being a pawn.

NATO did see THEY FELT THEY COULD NOT DEPEND on a Trump presidency to have their back. They had to gain more independence from the US.
