How does anyone graduate high school and not know about these classic experiments/teaching tools of the 60s? Honestly. How can you not heard these experiments mentioned? And what they brought out in the kids. That the arbitrarily favored group would begin to mistreat the disfavored group and begin noticing their flaws. So interesting.
But harmful to the kids because being in a disfavored group for more than an hour is too much. But these teachers observations of how the children quickly responded to being cruel to their classmates and friends is so illuminating. If you’re favored, you start to disparage tge disfavored in your mind even though the kids knew this was arbitrary.
And in the 60's those kids were living in times of segregation and discrimination.
No longer nurturing and trusted to teach the most precious resource we have, children. The new indoctrinators of the hateful ideology of Critical Theory.
Now those kids know what it's like to be judged on their appearances. The follow-up is crucial, though, and if the kids were upset the teacher may not have made the lessons clear.
Although perhaps 10-year-olds are a little young to be learning harsh social realities.
The "harsh social reality" here is the fact that this radical anti-racist Jane Elliot nastiness persists and grows ever more prominent in education circles. Yes, it would be better if 10-year-olds weren't exposed to it.

It was a two-day experiment during a section of social studies that dealt with the Civil Rights movement. I don't think any of the parents squawked about it. We had a discussion about how we felt each of those days, and how it could apply to race overall.
What do you mean "separated"? Were you treated unfairly?

These psychological social experiments are not new - there is nothing weird about them - they are not "wrong" - if your kid doesn't "get" it, then hopefully they will think about the entire experience and over time will see the point.
The drama of crying about, what in the past, would be considered enlightening, boggles my mind.
I read something recently that said that evolution doesn't guarantee future people will be smarter than present ones and this thread illustrates that.
