Berkeley, California is well known for it's unique look at the government. However, the City is only 7.9% African American. Also, there isn't necessarily any bad part of Berkeley. The lowest priced home on Redfin right now is a teardown for $600K. Once you get out of the blatant fixer uppers, you are at $1M.
Values, aside from the Southeast corner which is richer, aren't all that different when you look at it in terms of $/sf.
I don't know who would be calling for reparations....from Berkeley specifically. People who live in Berkeley are generally well off...or in college.
Jim Crow laws and the like were terrible and mark a low point in the US legal system....but when was this issued from the municipality of Berkeley? When was racial based slavery legal....in Berkeley?
So if one were to conclude that, in fact, this didn't actually happen in Berkeley, at what point does spending money fall outside of scope (which happens as statues of local groups are erected all the time) and finally shift over into specific demographic pandering by a politician with taxpayer money along protected demographics.
Mobile Alabama....great....but why Berkeley? Besides, shouldn't judgement be granted via the court system? If I did something offensive to Bart and years later my kid decided to do something for George....who is even to say that what I've done is even a step in the right direction?

It's kind of weird for the group who has been disproportionately murdering and raping all other groups it shares the country with for over 100 years to receive reparations because they were purchased from African slave traders into one of the smallest slave economies in the Americas, then among the earliest liberated in the world.
There is a stronger argument for reparations in the opposite direction when you compile the insanely disproportionate interracial murder/rape rates, insanely disproportionate contributions vs burdens to the economy, etc.
