Visit old graveyards.

What you'll see, commonly, and sadly, is a pair of graves with a mom and baby - the mom died in childbirth (you can tell by her death date and the baby's birthdate), and the baby dies a week or two later.

Sad, but that's reality.

I don't see that, in tombstones that are from the 1960's onward nearly as often.

We didn't have germ theory or appendectomies for most of humanity's lifespan either. People died who didn't have to, and it sucked.

Before formula, goat milk was the preferred goto if no wet nurse. Some babies survived, some didnt. Also people tended to have large families and usually some woman in family nursing own baby and could wet nurse the other relatives baby. And as others pointed out, lot babies died. Usually from whatever disease going around, but sure some died from not having mothers milk or enough mothers milk or whatever.

What is totally weird is all these warnings not to try anything except expert approved corporate formula. I guess its better the baby starve than try anything not approved by experts. Weird world. Hey if its choice between baby starving and hunting down some goat milk, guess what, the kid will get goat milk. Still might not make it, but it beats starvation.

The WSJ had a great article on this very topic. The States’ WIC programs give out government contracts to one or two companies. Those companies get the best placement and expert endorsements for their formula. It basically eliminates the competition. Then, the FDA shut down production at one of those companies and last I heard still has it shut down despite finding no contamination. This is a 100 percent government created crisis.

tight margins, consolidation, and limited manufacturing base all lead to these things in our supply chain.

Golly, welcome to City-Data, so glad to have you here.

The Abbott factory shut down voluntarily even though the CDC "analyzed clinical samples from two of the infants and did not find a genetic match to the environmental strains found at the plant. It also said the bacteria from the patient samples were not closely related to one another."

Abbott knows that even untrue stories about a company can sink it.

The reason baby formula can't be imported is because of federal government regulations. We know who loves government regulations and it ain't Republicans.

The Republicans did not VOTE AGAINST a bill "to ease the baby formula shortage". They voted against a bill to ADD MORE FDA REGULATORS. Explain to me HOW adding more regulators helps "American babies."

Pretty weak stuff.

In most cases governments create monopolies.

Most of mankind can. The issue is some babies are indeed allergic to breast milk. Not directly allergic but rather being allergic to foods that are passed on by mothers to their baby through breast milk. This is due to typical food allergins like soy, dairy, eggs, nuts and citrus or food sensitivity like tea, cola, coffee and caffeine. https://www.happiestbaby.com/blogs/b...%20in%20babies.

As for tap water vs. spring water, electrolyte water, sports drink, etc. tap water can have a bland or metallic taste. I live in Arizona so unless water is softened, it would taste bad from the tap. If you want to get a weird experience with water, drink a bottle of your electrolyte water of choice and then fill it back up from a random drink fountain. I've done this and the bottle can look cloudy. My favorites to drink are Liquid Death canned spring water, Propel and store brand electrolyte water (think SmartWater.) In Arizona the electrolytes help esspecially in summer with everything you sweat out even if not working out. Read more: https://www.eldoradosprings.com/blog...ater-taste-bad

Yrs but Abbot not cleaning up their act and not upgrading the systems caused for unsafe baby formula. Cheapos, and being basically the only company making it. The link I posted talks about following the money trail. Stock buybacks is it?
