I think MLK day is a more appropriate Holiday than Juneteenth is. The message of MLK resonates through the decades and is a message that we should live by every single day. He had a dream that we would all be good to each other and be judged by the content of our character and not our skin tone.

Independence Day celebrates the Birth of a Nation. What message does Juneteenth give us but to remind us that Black people were once owned by Whites. What is to celebrate in that? Yes Juneteenth is all about the official ending of slavery and that is a positive for us all but as a white guy celebrating it and wishing someone a Happy Juneteenth day feels odd.
While Christmas is the only federal holiday, schools are closed here for numerous religious holidays such as Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah, otherwise known as the days many complain about because school just started and they're getting days off already, which now means I have to take a day off. (not meant as a disrespect to those that celebrate)

You can easily spin your statement to say "Independence day celebrates the official ending of ownership by the British." Should someone of British descent feel odd wishing us a happy Independence day?

Slavery comes in many forms, making this so-called holiday rather moot.
But the workers children are not seized an sold to a new owner so there you have a it a reason to celebrate the end of that practice. As worthy for a party as leaving a state because you were being taxed without being able to vote for representatives in parliament.

At least 16 shot dead over Christmas 2022 weekend

The difference between Christmas and Juneteenth is that some people are more actively seeking the news of the shootings for Juneteenth.

I'm from the Northeast, where Juneteenth hasn't traditionally been a "thing." Hearing the history definitely fills some voids in my knowledge of how something like the Emancipation was practically enacted.

For those who can't appreciate what's behind it, I guess just enjoy a free day off?
But it's not really free. As in there is no free lunch.

"Middle class people who get up every day and go to work day." You know, the people who pay most of the taxes to this over-bloated monstrosity called the federal government.

Has anyone said to you Happy Juneteenth? Are we supposed to say this to Black people? It sounds wrong and a bit racist for some reason.

July 4th Independence day is a Holiday for every single American but Juneteenth feels like it is only for a certain people.

It just seems odd to have a Holiday that singles out a Race because we are supposed to be One and Equal as Americans.

Am I wrong in thinking this?
There are several things wrong with this "Holiday". No, not what is being Celebrated. No, not that the event wasn't significant to people. But how this has been corrupted by the Liberals and Race Baiters.

This has been a Holiday in Texas for over 100 years because it affected people in Texas. Makes total sense and as far as I know, was never "controversial", and in fact Celebrated by all races.

Yet the National Liberals had to make a point and appease a certain group, and made it very clear that this was for a certain group. Juneteenth was the logical choice for them. Even though they could have chosen one of several other good dates.

The official name of the "Holiday" isn't just "Juneteenth", it is "Juneteenth National Independence Day". Sorry, but this has nothing to do with the Nation being free. Yet, here we are with a second Independence day.

I'll be very happy to support the next Federal Holiday..."Woketeenth"..."Woke Independence Day"

We count down as if the world made it around the sun, but that actually happens hours later but the time won't facilitate the party rituals.

There was an existing party, in Texas going on so the federal holiday grafting on to that one. It is no different from the western church choosing their day. Or adding days to a calendar and ignoring the actual time the earth made it around the sun again
LOL, now you're just getting silly. When do we celebrate the independence of this nation? July 4th, the date the Declaration of Independence was signed. Veteran's Day? 11/11, the date WWI ended. MLK day? On his birthday. We don't arbitrarily pick days to celebrate historic events-we celebrate them on the day they occurred. "Labor Day" is arbitrary in that it doesn't celebrate a specific, historic event. Unlike the ending of slavery in the US-which did occur at one specific time-the proclamation of the 13th Amendment-on 18 DE, 1865.

Juneteenth makes sense for the people of TX, just as other days in various states would make sense when those states outlawed slavery. But for the nation? It only makes sense to celebrate the day the NATION ended slavery-again, DE 18th.

Juneteenth marks a day when all Americans were free
It's a day that all Americans should celebrate
