New Jersey - in person and mail in votes. A guy was arrested for rigging mail in votes foe US Congressional race in the state and apparently the Governors race too. Nobody cares here, and I posted it on this forum too, and nobody seems to care.

Living in NY I voted on Lever Machines from 1972 until 2004. 2007 in Florida on a touch screen computer. 2017 in PA also on a touch screen computer. NEVER filled out any ballot in person and feed it into a machine.

BTW, PA does not have MASS MAIL Ballots, as some states do. You have to request it for every Election you want to vote by mail. For this year's Primary, the request did list 5 "excuses". No Excuse Mail Ballots? I answered None of the Above but my request was still approved. Maybe they gave the Old Lady living in a rural area a pass. ROFL

The handicapped can vote by mail. If voting in person, you show your ID and they mark your name on the list of registered to show you voted. You get a paper ballot, you mark the oblongs, then you feed it privately into the scanner. If the results are close, the ballots are hand counted again and marked by election judges. Each ballot is read by a Republican and a Democrat.
The handicapped must request a ballot for each election and must be registered in their ward.

In North Carolina, we now show an ID, fill out a paper ballot, and put it into the electronic counter.

The only change I wish they would make is to give out a paper receipt of what the counter recorded, so as to instill as much confidence as possible that my vote, and the people I voted for, counts and are counted correctly.

I vote by mail. Ballots are card stock . We fill in bubbles by our candidate choices using a black pen. Put ballot in the enclosed envelope, sign the back of the envelope. Put stamp. I put in my outgoing mail but there are locations you can drop off (our city hall is one location). There is a website we can go to to verify our ballot has been received.

We also feed the ballot in the scanner ourselves. The poll worker is standing next to the scanner presumably to help those who don't know how to put it in. The worker is standing close enough that it's possible he might be able to tell who you voted for, at least at the top of the ballot. I think it would be better if the worker was some distance away if help is needed, which is probably very rare to nonexistent.

If that happened I'm sure that there would be people claiming that poll workers stand too far away and it gives people an opportunity to feed fraudulent ballots through the scanner.

As long as people want to believe that the process is rigged no amount of explaining how the process is secure and verifiable. For example if they claim that the scanners flip votes, they have no explanation of why a hand count matches the scans. Or if the say that fake ballots were tallied the can't explain why all ballots have been verified by the system, you can't simply make copies of a real ballot and not think that they aren't individually coded.

Forgot to add, Louisiana also has early voting at designated locations. In person voting requires showing an ID which is then checked with voter rolls. Poll worker makes his or her mark next to your name and you sign your signature next to your name to show you voted. Early voting is good for those who engage in hunting or fishing or those who don’t expect to be in the area on Election Day. It’s been decades since I tried to vote by absentee ballot. At that time it required a request for absentee ballot and additional signatures on ballot before being mailed back. I was in the Navy for the 92 presidential election. Though I received my ballot, it didn’t arrive in time for me to cast my vote.

Step 1: Go to assigned polling location

Step 2: Go to assigned table

Step 3: Tell your name to worker, sign next your name on the roster, to be verified against the signature on file

Now, about Step 3. The last election, I signed the roster as I have for the past 30 years. This year however, the worker stated that my signature deviated from the signature on file and I could not be given a ballot. Perplexed, I offered to show my driver's license... but he stated that they "cannot use a driver's license to verify identity;" signature match only. I was annoyed because, while part of my signature was admittedly a bit scrawled after a long day of writing, the first letter of my signature is quite distinctive and always looks the same. I asked to speak to someone in charge, who also wouldn't look at my license. At this point I was fuming and all but accused them of voter suppression, so they capitulated and accepted my license as verification.

Step 4: Complete paper ballot

Step 5: Feed ballot into scanner, face down

Step 6: Receive confirmation that said ballot has been received and tallied
