The faculty can't do that and they KNOW they can't do that. This is just another leftist passive-aggressive temper tantrum and when they're publicly called on it they'll just slink back into whatever Marxist hole they crawled out of like they always do. Can you imagine the lawsuits that would spring up from this?

Here's the problem with faculty withholding grades...

It punishes ALL students, not just those who've vandalized the school and committed violence.
Graduating students won't get their degrees.
Students without the prerequisite credit will be knocked out of classes required for their academic track, prolonging the amount of time it will take to earn their degree.
Students on academic scholarships will lose their scholarships if the withheld grades mean the difference between maintaining the required GPA or not.
And that's just the beginning...

UNC faculty to withhold final grades for all - The Carolina Journal
It does say some students and I bet they are Jewish students or those that stood up against the pro-Palestinian protestors. There will be a lot of phone calls from lawyers and I hope they realize the names of all these teachers - they are there to teach not make demands. In fact I'm sure they are in violation of their contracts and could be let go for demanding something not in their contract.

I see this on People's court all the time - must be some stupid professors who wouldn't have thought of this before they tried this.

UNC Admin responds...

Quote:
Full statement from UNC-Chapel Hill Provost Chris Clemens and Graduate School Dean Beth Mayer-Davis

Dear Deans and Department Chairs,

We are hearing concerns from students whose instructors have informed them they will withhold grades as part of a protest. These students depend on the timely submission of their grades for graduation, jobs, and athletic eligibility, and it is part of the required duties of all faculty and graduate TAs to submit grades by the registrar deadlines.

We are asking you to please work with your faculty and graduate students to ensure that we follow exemplary practice in our work as educators. We strongly support the right of faculty and graduate students to express their opinions freely but there are better ways to do this than hurting our students and abrogating our contract with the people of North Carolina who support our university. We are counting on your leadership in this matter.

The provost's office will support sanctions for any instructor who is found to have improperly withheld grades, but is our hope we can resolve this matter amicably and without harm to students.

Excellence in the classroom and in research are a credit to the institution and a vital service to the students and people of North Carolina. It would be a disservice to all of you and to the institution if a minority of instructors were to damage the trust we hold with our students by withholding grades. Thank you for your support.

Then they should have put out a hotline number for students to call, to join lawsuits that go after the teachers involved in this Civil Rights violation.

Interesting that administration is being so incredibly diplomatic with faculty who are pulling a really stupid stunt given how incredibly heavy handed said administration was with students who were peacefully protesting. It's unfortunate that the well compensated adults on both sides can't do better.
