Of course not, but why would a place advertise itself as "gay" if it weren't going to be catering to the flamboyant lifestyle?

Otherwise they'd just be tourists looking around, nobody'd hardly even notice them.

I certainly see your point, but the ad in question doesn't advertise bars and clubs and parties. It advertises history and beaches.

It seemed aimed at gay couples more interested in antiquing and B and B's than feather boas and raves.

All the ad really says is "SC is so Gay", which means... what?

(I mean, it is a little gay. Have you seen the way it looks at Virginia when North Carolina isn't paying attention?)

It seems to me like an attempt to draw in a new target market, which, based on my take on the ad and the experience I have in advertising to target markets, is the older, more sophisticated gay couple.

I understand what you're saying; but I'd still be taken aback if I saw an ad that said my state "...is SO Gay!" (even though it actually is to some degree in my current state's case).

“I think with today’s economy, we have to be really smart with our tourism dollars, and South Carolina’s market, very clearly, is the family-friendly market,” Smith said. “So if we want to spend our dollars in a way that’s wise, we need to go after our market, and our market is families.”

Someone needs to inform the man that gays have and are families.

Yep. I know. Although I live in Chicago now, I was born and raised in SC, and my family has been there for literally 300+ years.

The ads would sure shock my dear old Grandmama.

Then again, she's shocked by Dentyne Ice commercials. (And rightly so. Those commercials are way oversexed. No gum is that sexy.)

Then gays should feel included by a family-friendly ad campaign.

"Toujours gai, toujour gai. boss sometimes i think that our friend mehitabel is a trifle too gay" from the musical Archie and Mahitabel

I guess there is such a thing as being "too toujour gay", at least in South Carolina. Oh Well.....we can take our business elsewhere. Such a pity though because it really is "so so gay!" (not that there's anything wrong with that.)

Maybe they need Monte Python's crew singing "He's a Lumber Jack and he's OK" to restore the state's Machismo.

Sure, go to one of the states that makes being gay the center of their tourism industry - kind of narrows the choices doesn't it. S.C. is being criticized as a horrible place for moving away from a message other states aren't considering using anyway.

Key West, or NYC or San Diego or Rehoboth Beach Delaware or Cape Cod or Ogunquit Maine, Providence RI or Boston, or Ashville or San Fransico or Washington DC etc etc etc The White Mountains in NH........believe me there are is no shortage of places that advertise "Gay Friendly". There is a whole website of gay friendly vacation destinations...and in less than 2 mins I located 12 in South Carolina. In California and NH the income being generated by gay weddings is putting millions into the tourist, catering, florest and hotel industry.
