Here is a list of a few things made from oil. ANWR Feature - Products Made From Oil So for all of the narrow minds that think that if we would all drive hybrids we could rid our lives of the evil black stuff. Educate yourselves. The world revolves around oil and will continue to do so for generations to come!
I dont think anyone thinks we can completely rid ourselves of oil.
Obviously you are up past your bedtime, so I will try to elaborate a little for you. There are many who think it is perfectly fine for the price of oil to be what it is and we deserve to be paying that much for it and it will expedite getting people out of their suv's and all of that is a good thing! The "point" is we could all be riding bicycles and the price of oil will still increase our cost of living. We need a lot of oil and we will for a long time and therefore we should be drilling for it anywhere we think it might be!
...just in case that surplus of production we currently have throughout the planet tanks and we can provide backup with a theoretical 2% in ANWR? Gotcha.

And if we develop alternative technologies to eliminate our need for oil to run our cars, we'll rely on it much, much less than we do now. We also might still be able to break our dependence on the flow of oil from unsavory Middle Eastern nations. I don't see how that's a bad thing. Nobody ever said we'd get rid of oil completely -- the point is to use less of it, and if we can use less, we should. Kind of a silly rant ...
If we stop wasting oil as a fuel then we will have enough to make our products at a reasonable price. Petroleum is the transportation fuel of choice because, until recently, it was cheap enough to burn. Most of the transportation needs can be replaced with less desirable and slower means powered by nuclear generated electricity. Long distance ground transport and intercity passenger service can be provided by electric railroads. Plug-in electric cars can take people to mass transit stations where electric trains take them to the cities where they are delivered by electric busses. Electric or hybrid trucks can do local freight distribution.
The big losers in this nuclear electric transportation scheme are long distance trucking and airplane travel. Both of these cannot be electrified without installing really long extension cords. Almost all of the rest can be electrified and powered by non-petroleum energy.

The only problem with this, is that the same wackos that say no drilling in ANWR are also screaming no nuclear power plants, no windmills, and no solar panels in the desert.
Energy has to come from somewhere. They had better make up their minds pretty quick

This is true. The hypocrisy drips with talk of "no windmills off the MA coast" because of a few birds or because of tourism concerns.
