No conspiracy. I just don't think that what the media exhibits is representative of its place in the minds of Americans. Sure it's at the forefront for some. But, for most of America, its not that important.

Amongst them, illegal immigration, something that seems to be downplayed by both sides of the debate on that issue. Considering that most of the "professional women" in California and Arizona are illegal aliens, and I've heard figures stating that 10% of all female Mexican illegals and 70% (!!!!!) of all Salvadoran female illegals become prostitutes in the US, due to the illegality of prostitution putting the business in the hands of pimps who prefer illegals because they are less likely to retaliate against abuse, and the line between coyote and pimp often being a very fine one indeed.( I would like verification on these figures, though)

This suggests that legalizing prostitution might help to combat illegal immigration, as that would mean that the pimps would be out of business and legal citizens would return to the world's oldest profession.

I live in Massachusetts, where gay marriage has been legal for 2-1/2 years. The sky hasn't fallen down, and I haven't had any lesbians climb through my window, put a gun to my head, and demand that I marry them.

The way I see it, churches can marry whoever they want, but civil marriage is a contract. Gay couples deserve the same civil protections as straight couples, including inheritance rights, health insurance, and the right to make life-support decisions if therir partner is incapacitiated.

I think the best way to handle this is to make all marriages "civil unions", like France, and Turkey. A couple that wants a religious marriage can get married in a church, but the govenment can only recognize "civil unions".

I think that most Americans have enought intelligence to realize that what is presented in the media, while presumably unbiased and objective, is written by human beings with opinions...so we only sometimes get one side of the issue or maybe a slanted version of it. I would hate to think people take everything they hear and read as truth.

And speaking of Americans...in civil rights issues affecting a minority, the opinions of the general public are not considered. That's why we don't vote on social issues, because minorities might often not be awarded basic rights and priveledges. Congress and the Supreme Court have a responsibility to protect minority groups from losing these rights or having them withheld...i.e. marriage. I personally don't give a **** about marriage, but I wish gay people would come up with some other name for it that can equal marriage (domestic partnership sounds like it's less important or a step below). Don't try to have what straight people have, who wants it anyway? Make up your own stuff.

That's a point on which while I wish you were right, most Americans are very susceptible to media slant and propaganda. Billions of dollars are spent in mainstream media every year because of this. A quick read of this forum is an indication of how many people believe everything they see and read. Most people were raised to believe that whatever was seen on TV and printed in the newspapers was truth, and for the most part it was the case for a long time. Now, truth is besides the point when some network executive or CEO or board member has an agenda to push. The notion of researching a story before broadcasting it is passe (ex: Obama and the madrassa).
