"Tesla then studied electrical engineering at the Austrian Polytechnic in Graz (1875). While there, he studied the uses of alternating current. Some sources say he received Baccalaureate degrees from the university at Graz.[13][14][15] However, the university says that he did not receive a degree and did not continue beyond the first semester of his third year, during which he stopped attending lectures.[16][17][18][19] In December 1878 he left Graz and broke all relations with his family. His friends thought that he had drowned in Mura. He went to Maribor, Slovenia, where he was first employed as an assistant engineer for a year. He suffered a nervous breakdown during this time. Tesla was later persuaded by his father to attend the Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague, which he attended for the summer term of 1880. Here he was influenced by Ernst Mach. However after his father died he left the university, having completed only one term.[20]"

"Tesla engaged in reading many works, memorizing complete books, supposedly having a photographic memory.[21] Tesla related in his autobiography that he experienced detailed moments of inspiration. During his early life, Tesla was stricken with illness time and time again. He suffered a peculiar affliction in which blinding flashes of light would appear before his eyes, often accompanied by hallucinations. Much of the time the visions were linked to a word or idea he might have come across; just by hearing the name of an item, he would involuntarily envision it in realistic detail. Modern-day synesthetes report similar symptoms. Tesla would visualise an invention in his brain in precise form before moving to the construction stage; a technique sometimes known as picture thinking. Tesla also often had flashbacks to events that had happened previously in his life; this began to happen during childhood.[21]"

So no a degree does not make you intelligent. It shows you have the ability to succeed. Intelligence is the abilty to comprehend IMO.

Einstein and Bose predicted this 70 years previously.

Intelligence: The ability to effectively translate ideas and observations into conclusions that can be acted upon.

If you are looking for a way to "measure" my definition of it. eh, that's beyond my intelligence.

The use of anecdotal examples to support a general statement is not a good indicator that you are intelligent.

Education can point you toward wisdom-no one person can live long enough to do so
on the basis of just their own expierence.
A sure sign of a fool is someone who thinks they can.

Intelligence has absolutely nothing to do with academic achievement .
To me it is first and foremost the ability to think for oneself and to think through issues in a logical, unemotional and detached manner and not getting bogged down by feelings rather than pure facts.

Some of the most intelligent people I have met left school without graduating and never went to university.
Intelligence is the product of careful thought, consideration and research into issues and ideas. It is the ability to process data in a sentient manner without prejudice and to act accordingly. I am constantly appalled at the lack of thought which goes into most people's serious decisions such as voting or how they come to conclusions about serious topical issues , current affairs etc...

Intelligence is something most of us are born with and something most of us discard in favour for easy judgement and facile decisions. I truly believe most human beings are born with fairly similar levels of intelligence but whether through personal circumstances or laziness most people just lack the ability to use their good judgement and act accordingly in daily life.

Adaptability is also in my opinion an outward sign of natural intelligence. The ability to read signs in others , or to adapt to new and difficult situations shows intelligence.
Knowledge does not hurt and one does not need to attend university to acquire facts. Gathering and deciphering complex data is something which is accessible to all especially nowadays.

Most people shy away from knowledge because it often comes with a dose of responsibility and duty and often dictates action.

Higher education institutions, for the most part, function as filters to select those people who can game the system to their maximum advantage, and then go on the real world and know how to game the system there. College curricula did not happen by accident. They were designed to serve the purposes of the future exploiters of the "educated". Presumably, a modicum of intelligence is considered to be one of the prerequisites for success in this enterprise. But not enough of it to rock the boat.

Good stuff. I believe academic achievement widens knowledge and contributes
to intelligence. When knowledge and intelligence are coupled with experience
then you have wisdom.

There are plenty of people with high IQs in low paying jobs. I'm sure there are homeless people who are geniuses.

Common sense goes a very long way, but when applying for a position of power and/or responsibility, one's education is an indication of his or her comprehension of complex problems and the willingness to solve them using research instead of relying on personal beliefs. A higher education also shows that a person is willing to work hard to reach goals without taking shortcuts.

If you just found out you had a brain tumor, for example, would you feel confident with a surgeon who was "energetic" and "full of spunk" or a man (or woman) who spent 8 years in college and several years of surgical residency at a top ranking hospital?
