Should the government be involved in marriage?
If not, how do you resolve the issues that come with state benefits of marriage and federal benefits of marriage?

I'm sure there are more questions so...feel free to ask and answer.
I just want to see people's views on the topic.

Marriage is a legal contract--and if 2 folks enter knowingly into marriage, then they should get the rights and benefits of that contract. Who cares who someone else marries? I don't! As long as I can marry whom I please, what someone else does really doesn't bother me.

And if the gov't. would pass the Flat tax, there would be no benefit (tax-wise) for being married or single.

Isn't it funny how the conservatives are the ones screeching about personal freedom, but passing laws give the government the right to present us with a list of eligible spouses.

Marriage is a religious institution and should be a contract entered into between the two spouses and God, the government has no business being involved in marriage. There should be no government benefits or penalties for marriage.

Where do you see this at, and what "government". States have full rights to limit eligible spouse requirements, just like they have a right to dictate what you can do with your private property. Funny, liberals dont seem to mind limiting property rights, but you dont have issue with that..

To answer your question, the federal government needs to remove any tax incentive to being married or not. The federal government should have no say in "marriage", nor do they have any legal authority to dictate it.

The states have the right to dictate "marriage" requirements.

It used to be this way, but slowly, (for the last 16 years at least) the federal government has been taking rights away from the states, in exchange for federal subsidies..

Isn't it funny how some people cannot grasp the difference between conservatives and the religious right and/or moral majority?

No they don't. States have a right to say who can marry and who cannot, based on age and perhaps other critersi, but once a person is eligible to marry, the government has no right to limit spouse choices. Unless you like the idea of government restrticting personal freedom in general. (My original post was edited, and not all replies are to the same version.)
